A broad stretch of highway that runs for miles through the New York countryside, until it ends in Buffalo. It is mostly empty in the stretches between the small towns it runs through, but as it nears Buffalo the undead numbers steadily rise.
The road is littered with abandoned cars, and when a town is near there can often be bodies found scattered across the pavement, decomposing in the hot New York summer.

The car broke down just a few miles outside of East Lancaster. It was bound to happen, and it didn't really matter. The closer they came to the urban area, the more dense the road became with cars. Weaving through them in a Jeep Wrangler would be impossible after another mile or so.
From her view in the passenger seat, Vivian could see that the car had stopped directly in front of the entrance to a large cemetary. A sign outside it told her it was St. Adalberts Cemetary, and it gave her the creeps. She turned to her boyfriend in the driver's seat, who was furiously trying to start the ignition. The engine just sputtered for a moment, then stopped at every twist of the key. "Can you fix it, Jerry?" She asked hopefully, the thought of having to walk through that maze of cars made her hair stand on end.
Jerry sighed and ended his futile attempts to start the car, "Someone else probably could...." He didn't need to finish his sentence, Vivian knew what that meant. They had to go on foot. And when they reached East Lancaster it would no doubt be infested. But then again, it was mostly just suburban neighborhoods, and wasn't even that big of a place.
And her friend lived there, and Vivian knew exactly where they hid the spare house key. "I know a place we can hide out in," she told Jerry and explained to him that her friend lived on Towne Square Drive, right near the edge of East Lancaster. Jerry sighed, "So I guess that means we're walking?"
Vivian replied with a sigh, "Yep." They both exited the car then, and slung their backpacks full of canned food and other necessities over their shoulders and eyed the car jammed road ahead of them. Vivian smiled weakly up at Jerry and intertwined her fingers with his and he gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. They ventured into the labyrinthine cluster of stationary eastbound cars.

The summer sun beat down on them as Vivian and Jerome maneuvered the mess of cars. Vivian unzipped her jumper to ventilate her body, while Jerry unbuttoned his shirt down to his lower chest. Both were sweating heavily. It wasn't easy navigating the road. At times they had to climb over cars, because of a massive pile-up, and they always had to be cautious, it was easy taking down the scattered ghouls on the road, but it was always possible there were some trapped in the cars that they had turned in, kept down by the seat belts they were too stupid to take off.
Jerry boosted Vivian on top of flipped semi truck before climbing up himself. They walked to the edge of the cargo carrier and looked at the remaining road ahead. They could see now that East Lancaster was only three or four miles ahead, but the ghouls became more common as the town drew nearer. Jerome winced, shielding his eyes from the harsh sun. Vivian was reading the side of the truck.
She grinned and tapped her boyfriend on the shoulder, "Jerry, look." She rapped the semi with her golf club. Jerry smiled wide, it was a Lays Chips truck. The couple hopped off the edge of the carrier and stood at the back. The door was unlocked, and upon opening the garage-like door that slid sideways into the roof, they found half the pay-load missing.
"They were probably in the middle of emptying it when s**t hit the fan," Jerry observed, "It's still alot though." Vivian stepped inside, the boxes were in a jumbled heap from when the truck flipped on its side, some boxes had come open but everything was okay.
"Chips are probably expired though," Vivian remarked from inside the carrier, "Still good to eat nonetheless." She knelt down and tore a box open, full of Doritos and she began stuffing them in her bag. Jerry did the same with a box of Baked Lays. By the time they were done, their bags were stuffed and not even half of what was left was gone.
"We could tell others about it," Vivian said as she dug through her bag. She came up with a can of spray paint, and on each side of the truck she wrote, In here is food, please take generously and close the door after yourselves. Then Jerry shut the door and Vivian wrote the same message on that. Jerry chuckled, "You think people will still have proper manners these days?" Vivian replied, "If they're alive then they're surviving, they'd want others to do the same."
They continued walking.

It took roughly an hour for them to reach East Lancaster. The density of zombies was so great that the couple needed to head into the southern roadside fields, darting from bush to bush to avoid being spotted. After passing through a field made up of dead trees and dirt, and then onto the small grassy backyards of suburbia. Vivian took Jerry's hand and led him to a house down the road, where it ended in a loop. There were virtually no ghouls around, a sign that told the pair that something had attracted them to another part of town.
Upon reaching the two story home, Vivian dove at a medium sized rock on the uncut grass. The rock was smooth and black and when Vivian flipped it over Jerry could see a house key in the dirt underneath. They entered the house cautiously, and after a quick routine search, came up with no ghouls and no bodies. They quickly covered the doors and windows with heavy wooden furniture and then climb wearily upstairs, leaving a heavy bookshelf at the foot to keep any intruders from climbing up.
They had a small dinner, consisting of canned peas, two Triscuits each and some of the chips they'd found in the semi. Then they went into the bathroom, stripped themselves of their clothes and washed each other with that water in the back of the toilet. It was the first bath they'd had in a long time.
By the time they were done scrubbing blood and dirt from their bodies, the sun was mostly under the horizon, and they slept together in the master bedroom, naked. As Vivian lay sleeping fitfully beside him, Jerry tried to recall the last time they had had sex, and wondered when they'd get being able to again. Because having sex during the zombie apocalypse was a major turn off. Jerry turned on his side facing Vivian and wrapped his arms around her and slowly drifted to sleep.
((Oh and to anyone reading this, this all takes place just a few days prior to whatever is going on now.))

Jerry woke up just as sunlight was beginning to creep through the blinds. He stretched and yawned, careful not to disturb Vivian, who was sleeping peacefully for the first time in weeks. He quietly slid out of bed and stepped into the bathroom. With the water in the back of the toilet he washed his face and stared at himself in the mirror. He looked like s**t. There were deep bags under his eyes, visible despite his dark skin tone and even after last night's bath he was still pretty grimy. He sighed and turned back to the bedroom when a pair of black boxer briefs hit his chest and fell to the floor. "Just thought you might need some fresh undies," Vivian remarked from across the room, she was slipping into a pair of panties. Under normal circumstances Jerry would have found it rather gross to where a pair of briefs that had once contained another man's p***s, but under circumstances such as these, it didn't compare to the amount of viscera he'd seen and worn. He slipped them on; they fit snugly. Several more articles of clothing hit his chest, dropping to the ground in a heap. Vivian added, "And don't worry, those're the son's clothes. You're not wearing some crusty old man's junk trunks." Jerry and Vivian shared a rare laugh, something they hadn't done in a long time, and they stared at each other lovingly for a few moments. Jerry put on the pair of faded blue jeans that fit well enough that he didn't need a belt. Then he pulled a white tee shirt over his head and buttoned up a white and black flannel shirt. He watched Vivian put on dark blue jeans and zip up a red jumper over a white tank top. The new clothes made the two of them look monumentally cleaner and they left their soiled clothes politely in the laundry hamper.
After a quick (and small) breakfast, they left the house refreshed and awake, ready to take on whatever Lancaster threw at them.

((I'm just going to time skip to present day, to give me a chance to join others.))
Lancaster was unsurprisingly full of the undead, and with some luck and after a few close calls, Vivian and Jerry managed to get through. It only got worse as they penetrated further. Hastily erected roadblocks hadn't done much to stop the ghouls, but the couple found the areas that were blocked off to be much safer. Over the next two days they managed to survive by breaking into suburban homes at night, and sticking to the shadows during the day time.
One of the eeriest things Vivians noticed was the lack of undead in some areas, a sign that told her that they had been lured off somewhere else. Now they were somewhere in the east of the city, at the point where Broadway Street abruptly ended. And they were positively lost.
