I disagree.
Combatting the people who hold an ideology and combatting the ideology itself go hand in hand.
The person and the ideology are two separate components. People hold the opinions that they do for a reason. I used to be conservative, Catholic, and stupid. Through protracted arguments, I realized that my former beliefs had no ground to stand on. I couldn't justify retaining those beliefs, as there was no evidence as to their validity that could withstand intellectual scrutiny. I am still the same person, but I no longer hold the same ideological position. See?
