これは日本語能力試験について会話です。誰か試験を受けるつもりですか。私は二級を受けるつもりです。毎日勉強しています！どの級を受けますか。 This will be a conversation concerning the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Does anyone intend to take it? I intend to take Level 2. I'm studying for it every day! Which level will you take? For those of you who don't know, the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT for short, and the romanji for the Japanese name of it is "Nihongo Nouryoku Shiken") is given once a year (the 1st Sunday in December) in major cities around the world, including the US. It has 4 levels, level 4 being the easiest (about 2nd-year student, I'd say) and level 1 the hardest (as in, you need to know the ins and outs of the language better than a native speaker in order to pass). いや、いや、いや！！！ gonk その試験の体制が変わりそうです！2010年から、４級じゃなくて、５Nのレベルがありそうです。そして、３分じゃなくて、（その３分は「文字・語彙」「聴解」「読解・文法」でした）二分だけに変わります。読む試験と聞く試験。おまけに、前年の試験の問題と答えが発表しません！ stressed 早く今度だけで学入出来るといいね・・・。でも、３級と２級の間にもう一つレベルを入れるのがいい事と思います。私にはもう関係ないけどね。
No, no, no!!! gonk It looks like the structure of the test is going to change! From 2010 on, it looks like there won't be 4 levels (kyuu), but 5 N levels. And then, instead of 3 parts (those 3 parts were "Characters and Vocabulary" "Listening Comprehension" "Reading Comprehension and Grammar"), it looks like it'll change to just 2 parts. Reading Test and Listening Test. And to make matters worse, they aren't going to release previous years' exams' questions and answers! stressed It would be nice if this time will be enough to get me into graduate school... But I do thinking putting one more level in between Levels 2 and 3 will be a good thing. Even if that doesn't do me much good now.

何年か前に2級合格しました。
今は日本語を勉強する時間が無くてそれ以上はうけていません。
いつかまた時間ができたら1級を試してみたいです。

I don't know an equivalent of "oh my gosh" in Japanese, but....that's what I'd say!
I'm considering it. I would LOVE to be that proficient, but I'm not sure where I'm heading yet. I definitely love Japanese enough to bother, but not sure if I can afford grad school.....

008ken_ichijouji I don't know an equivalent of "oh my gosh" in Japanese, but....that's what I'd say! I'm considering it. I would LOVE to be that proficient, but I'm not sure where I'm heading yet. I definitely love Japanese enough to bother, but not sure if I can afford grad school..... If I am unable to get a graduate assistantship, then then we'll probably get a loan. Wouldn't it be nice if I won a whole bunch of money? rofl

日本語に於いて意外と一番難しい点は文法。初めて勉強する人は漢字だ！と言われるが実は高度の文法の方が理解しにくいよね。特に使い方は把握しにくい。文法に上がれば上がるほど使える文型と表現は多くなるにしても、その中で一番合っている表現はどっちだろうか困る。
一方、日本語能力試験は文法中心じゃない。語彙を強調しているそうだから文法に弱くても沢山単語を知ってたら平気に受かると思う。
２級と３級の差は大きいけど、頑張れば合格できるはず。￥

I am daunted by the idea. But I feel that if i just stick with it, there will be a time to take the JLPT. But until then I will study Japanese to broaden my education, and have a lifetime hobby.

If you want to take level 4, it's really not that bad. You need to know about 105 kanji and have a basic understanding of grammar and a basic vocabulary. I would really recommend www.whiterabbitpress.com to buy some Level 4 study guides. If you've been through a full year of college classes and did really well, you should be okay on Level 4.
If I can get moderator status, I'll see if I can go back and add translations for the previous posts. sweatdrop
