I grew up with NES/SNES RPG's and to this day I believe them to be superior to what they are coming out with now. Companies just seem to be destroying the genre with flashy graphics and too much hack 'n slash.

Give me battle variety like Crono Trigger and a storyline like FFVII and you have a pretty good recipe for a pretty good game ((IMO)).

So I have broken out my Emulators and have been searching through some NES/SNES/Genesis RPG's to play... and either I've gone through the games already, or they just aren't appealing to me. I have played and beaten every Final Fantasy up to 8... (Even the Japanese ones that were the ORIGINAL I-II))

I've gone through the awesome Dragon Warrior classics ((1-4)) which were amazing. Hell, I even killed countless hours on Wizardry.

So... what type of RPG's are you into, and what would you suggest trying out? Note that I only have basic Emulators ((No PS1 etc.)) and I have access to a powerful PC, so bring it!

Hey Hydranis *waves* You're in the wrong sub forum. This is the games forum you want the "Gaming" forum. It's a little towards the end on the main list.

Doh, must have read through it too fast. Could a MOD possibly move this?

I think so. You should ask Alias Facade he's on right now and he is in charge of the Gaming sub forum, maybe he can help.

Hey, hope nobody minds if I move this. sweatdrop

Regarding the topic, I hasn't played much of Nes/Snes and quite little Sega Genesis. Though now I have a Genesis in my hands and hope to catch up on what I missed.

I hear Altered Beast for Genesis is really good, I intend to get around to check it out sometime. Lol.

Hey, sure thanks for seeing this! I didn't check the Games forum today... maybe we should try and have the titles adjusted so the names aren't so similar. I'll ask our glorious guild leader for an assist mrgreen

As far as classic games go, Altered Beast was certainly one of my favorites on the Genesis, but it was more of an action platformer than an RPG.

If your a big fan of the Squaresoft style RPGs, then you should be sure to check out the Sword of Mana and Secret of Mana. Seiken Densetsu 3 is the Japanese version that was third in the series but never made it stateside, though fan-subbed versions can be found in English and it is certainly worth playing! The Super Mario RPG was also surprisingly good. From the Genisis I would suggest the Shadowrun RPG.

If you like a bit more action in your RPGs, don't forget the Legend of Zelda titles, particularly "A Lind to the Past" for the SNES. You might also enjoy Ys 3: Wanderers from Ys. From the Genesis, the Phantasy Star series is also worth looking at.

If you like tactical RPGs (grid and turn based strategy) I would recommend Treasure Hunter G and Tactics Ogre.

Admittedly, Chrono Trigger and FFVII are two of the most highly esteemed RPGs in history, and there aren't many games for any system ever that quite compare, but that doesn't mean the others aren't worth playing! Hope this list keeps you entertained for a while... Let us know what you think mrgreen

PS - Since you mentioned having a pretty good PC, you may also want to look for the Bauldurs Gate series and Plainscape Torment for the PC... they're older RPGs, but among my favorite for sheer variety and depth of story!

Alias I'm ashamed of you. That list is FAR too small.
SNES RPG's
Secret of Mana
Secret of Evermore
Illusion of Gaia
Mario RPG
7th Saga
Breath of fire I & II
Crono Trigger
Final Fantasy 2/4, 3/6
Lufia 1&2 (loved this series)
Uncharted Waters: New Horizons
Legend of Zelda: A link to the past
Ogre Battle. (ph34r the tactics Ogre. Worst sequel evah)

Now this list is only the SNES games I've played and would recomend.

Now Contrary to the all RPG's are going down the pisser comment. Some new "Action RPG's" (I hate that) are actually worth a damn. Fallout 3 and especially Mass Effect are fantastic games. The last remnant has a good story more or less but the difficulty is retarded.

well i agree, the good RPGs are pretty much all gone
i haven't played the Final fantasy (insert roman numeral here) games, but i suppose i don't feel it to be a role playing game if you are not the main character.
i enjoyed the first Final Fantasy game for NES where you got to choose your party and you got to name them and it was you and your party not mr cloud and his party or anything like that. and the fighter had red yarn for hair and the thief had aqua blue hair and we liked it that way pirate

Awesome, thanks for the suggestions! At the current moment, I am playing through the Golden Sun series again. Just started my game the other day, and have been on and off it since.

WHOA Delaun, that could be the first time I've seen someone who's played as many RPGs as I have. =0 I guess that's what happens when you start at age 4. xd

For SNES RPGs I'd also recommend Earthbound-- it's cracked out but really fun. Seiken Densetsu III is also really good if you have an emulator.

The best RPG I've played in a while (although I guess it's an action RPG) is The World Ends With You for DS. It is sooooooo good. Sosososo good. And also available on emulator, for those of us who have to pay rent.

I'm really mystchevious Delaun is my cute alt... but anyways. Those are just some of the Snes RPG's I've played. Honestly my favorite games are spread out over the systems. (except sega.. DIE SEGA DIE) But if you get a chance play the Suikoden Series. There is something just so epic when you walk into the final dungeon and your powerhouse character is the lady who washes laundry for your castle. No really the game lets you collect 108 characters so you get characters who's sole job it is to do random things... Oh yeah AND *nods head in anticipation NPH style* Wait for it. *keeps nodding* Cooking Battles.

Not a game, an actual gameboy advance. Looking for a cheap deal somewhere online.
