So make a magic portal to Germany. There's lots of forests there, and you could even take hubby on a trip back home.

Actually, you could simply boat out to one of the larger islands. There are several nice ruins on most, too. Though at the point in time that this takes place, they may actually be still standing. Most of the buildings, if still standing, would be large manors, with a few being watch towers. I believe there was also a prison at one point.
Then again, since the first World War hasn't happened yet, a few of the watch towers wouldn't have been built yet, so there should still be wildlife on those islands.
Granted none of the forests would be terribly large, more groves than anything, but they're there. Or, at least, they should be.
