Allow me to elaborate on my somewhat ambiguous thread title:
Occasionally, when I listen to music, I find a song that, as I like to put it, "speaks" to me. What that actually means, is a song that, through some mysterious mechanism, seems to have an intimately personal meaning to me. This does not necessarily need to be generated by the lyrics, it can be related to the the music itself, or even just the overall tone communicated by the song.
So my question is, am I the only person who experiences this phenomenon?
Also, since I doubt sincerely I am in fact the only one, what songs cause you to feel this way?
For me? The only ones that stand out at the moment are:
Darkness by Disturbed
The City Ignites by 36 Crazyfists.

Although I personally dislike Billy Joel's music, I connect with "The Longest Time". Every time I hear it, I can't even bring myself to sing because I am too busy listening and feeling. The melody stands out to me more than most songs. I think about my partner every time it comes on the radio. Lyrics Sample: Once I thought my innocence was gone Now I know that happiness goes on
I can, however, sing to Yann Tiersen's "Monochrome". When I'm really mellowed out and I am reflecting on the inevitability and nature of solitude, this song is exactly how I feel. It sounds so soothing and yet so mournful too; it perfects that hopeful but still helpless tone. Lyrics Sample: Monochrome floors Monochrome walls Only absence near me Nothing but silence around me
Whenever I hear "Hurt" by Johnny Cash playing anywhere, I have to check to see if I am going to be okay to listen or not. While "Monochrome" is bittersweet, "Hurt" can ruin my day. Nearly every line brings me back to the worst day I've ever had, and I just break down. Lyrics Sample: What have I become? My sweetest friend Everyone I know Goes away in the end
I know the explanations weren't necessary, but I thought sharing would be nice. That way, if anyone is too lazy to inspect the lyrics, it is all right here.
Omnipotent Uncertainties: "Darkness" is a hauntingly beautiful song. Thank you for sharing with us.

ze professionalle: Hurt is a truly chilling glimpse into the mind of Johnny Cash, its a touching tune that forces its listener to reflect much like cash does in the video and song. Thank you for giving it mention.
When it comes to relaxing, I find that my mellowed out mood is complemented perfectly my Queens of the Stone Ages' "Auto Pilot".

Fun fact: "Hurt" was originally by Nine Inch Nails and later perfected by Johnny Cash.
I can't actually think of a song the really speaks to me right now. I'm sure there are those that do, but none that I can think of even after looking through my library and a bit of deep pondering.

ProphitAngell Fun fact: "Hurt" was originally by Nine Inch Nails and later perfected by Johnny Cash. I feel silly now >< I honestly didn't know NIN were the original makers of Hurt, I actually assumed they were doing a cover of JCs song. Thanks for letting us know Prophit :/

The only song that "speaks " to me is Don't Jump by Tokio Hotel. The lyrics helped me understand that suicide isn't the only way when you have problems. So technally it saved me from committing suicide.

I didn't even know until recently and that's because the NIN version is not NEARLY as good. A song that not really speaks to me, but does something for me is What I got (Reprise) by Sublime. It's one of those songs that I listen to and it just makes everything seem alright and I want to dance and be happy more than it seems with others. XD

Permanent by David Cook is definitely a song that pretty much hits me in the face every time I listen to it, as well as Stand Up by Flobots. Angel by Flipsyde makes me feel happy, though :] And I love to hear songs that remind me of the past. I get this weird, nostalgic feeling when I do, particularly listening to Blink 182 and Sugar Ray.
