Well, for those who don't know, it's called "Happiness".
For me, I REALLY enjoyed this album, even though it was a departure from their last album (the Untitled one) and a HUGE departure from their older material with Jonny Craig (Downtown Battle Mountain & Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean).
Even though they replaced Jon Mess (whose screams were very unique), I think Will Swan's screams are a big improvement over his. They're deeper, and fuller.
I think the instrumentals have definitely improved (the guitar work can get very intense). Also, I also enjoy Kurt's vocals much more, (though I still enjoyed them in the Untitled album), he's definitely carved himself a place in Dance Gavin Dance now, I think more people have warmed up to him, because after all, it's next to impossible to find someone with enough balls to stay in Jonny Craig's shadow).
Sure, some people may be put off by this departure, but this is a band that's growing up, or course they are going to change at one point. In my opinion, if they keep going in this direction, they have a bright future ahead of them. Though the certain "intensity" of their older material isn't quite the same, I've gotten used to the change and this is a definite show that they don't need Jonny Craig to remain an amazing band.
Standout tracks: "NASA", "Carl Barker", "Don't Tell Dave" (probably their most experimental song, they havent done ANY song as poppy as this, devoid of screaming, very dancey, I LOVED it though. 50/50 for some of the more old-school fans though.)
Blahhh long review I know. Anyone else have thoughts to share? Love it, hate it, and why.
