Hogsmead

Hogsmeade Village, or simply Hogsmeade is the only all-Wizarding village in Britain. It was founded by Hengist of Woodcroft. Hogsmeade is located at the northwest of Hogwarts Castle. Students may sometimes come on weekend trips, but only third year students and above with guardian permission are allowed to visit. Mainly, students frequent a high street in the Village which contains the named specialty shops and pubs in the series such as Zonko's Joke Shop and Honeydukes.. Otherwise, they wander on to observe the infamous Shrieking Shack.

Hogsmeade is a picturesque little village of thatched cottages and shops, with enchanted candles hanging in the trees during the holidays. It is also the location of the train station used by the Hogwarts Express.

Shrieking Shack

The Shrieking Shack is an abandoned house in Hogsmeade. For many years, villagers thought it was haunted because they often heard screams coming from inside, and Albus Dumbledore encouraged the rumour. According to Nearly Headless Nick, not even the Hogwarts ghosts will enter it.

The Shrieking Shack's entrance from the Hogwarts Grounds is the base of the Whomping Willow. The trick is to poke the knot in the trunk which stops the tree hitting anyone. One way to do this is to to either use a long stick or get Crookshanks to do it. The secret passageway can be seen on the Marauder's map.

In reality, the Shrieking Shack was built so that Remus Lupin would have a place for his monthly transformations into a werewolf in secret and in safety, during the time he was a student attending Hogwarts. The yells and shouts heard by the villagers were really Lupin biting and scratching himself due to lack of humans to infect.

The Three Broomstick

The Three Broomsticks is a popular inn on the High Street in Hogsmeade. It is more popular and inviting than the Hog's Head Inn, as it attracts a friendlier crowd. It is often warm, crowded, and a bit smoky, but clean and welcoming. Butterbeer is one of the popular drinks that the inn served to its costumers. A mirror behind the bar reflects the cosy atmosphere, and drinks are served in glasses and in pewter tankards. One of the stronger drinks would have to be Firewhiskey, which is very easy to get drunk on. In Sites of Historical Sorcery it says the inn was the headquarters for the 1612 goblin rebellion.

Hog's Head

The Hog's Head is an inn and pub in the all wizarding village of Hogsmeade. The bar at the Hog's Head comprises one small, very dirty, and dingy room that has bay windows that are so encrusted with filth that you can barely see through them. The place is filled with rough wooden tables that generally have nothing except the stubs of candles sitting upon their surfaces. The concrete floor of the place is so dirty that it looks as though there isn't a floor at all, but instead that the building is simply built on open ground. The Hog's Head is owned and operated by Aberforth Dumbledore.

Scrivenshaft's Quill Shop

Scrivenshaft's Quill Shop is a common supply store in Hogsmeade. It sells various quills, parchment and stationery needed for students at Hogwarts. The shop stock includes stationery such as rainbow ink and extra-large quills. However, students usually prefer to visit Zonko's or Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes when it comes to buying special quills such as joke quills and sugar quills. Scrivenshaft's is visited by Hermione on at least one occasion when she wants to purchase a new quill.

Hogsmeade Station

Hogsmeade Station, also known as Hogwarts Station, is the railway station that serves both the village of Hogsmeade and Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The station is located near the Hogwarts Lake, and from there a road extends around the lake to Hogwarts Castle. It is actually quite a distance from the village itself, being on the opposite side of the Hogwarts grounds. The Hogwarts Express stops here after travelling from King's Cross Station.
