I just joined this Guild and I noticed that as of now I am the only person here who does Shotokan Karate, so I decided to tell you guys a little bit about it.
In shotokan we believe that every single technique should be the last one you need. Every single blow is a killing blow no matter how strong or weak the attacker is. In shotokan, our greatest ally is the floor, we use the floor to generate all of the power and send it all out at once with a terrifying punch or kick.
That's about it for now, or all the stuff that is important anyway. XP

Yeah, we used to have a Shotokan School not too far from my house, but I think they relocated somewhere else. I watched some Shotokan classes, it seemed pretty intense!
I like the idea of using a single blow to end the fight. I've had a few instructors say, "If you actually ever finish a technique all the way through, you didn't do it right, cause all it should take is one good strike to end it all."
If done right, there is no difference between a block and a strike!
By the way, welcome to the guild! I look forward to learning more about Shotokan!

The coolest thing is though is that my sensei lives only a couple houses down.

That is cool. It's nice to have easy access to your instructors. The school I work at isn't really a school, but a club with a few members. It's beneficial for me because I am the only colored belt among the all black belt group. It's just myself, our 3rd degree black belt instructor, my boyfriend and his dad (both 1st degree black belts) and a guy with a black belt in aikido. I get lots of feedback and also get to work on stuff that's more advanced then most people of my same rank. It's nice, it gives me a better understanding and a better work out!

Yeah, we have stripes in between each color as well. How many you get generally depends on how well you learn. Say one student is a really good learner and another isn't, the not so quick to learn student will get more stripes on their belt because instead of testing for a belt at the promotion tests, they will be awarded a stripe as a symbol that they are still learning their material, whereas the quicker to learn student will just be promoted to the next rank.
I'm curious about the stripes in your system, why are they only awarded at certain ranks?
Also, I sent you a PM about the Banner! xd

well when I say blue belt with stripe...well I suppose it is green belt with stripe but anyway. It is a green belt with a thin blue stripe going all the way around the belt. And yes it is higher rank. I am a Brown Belt (3rd Kyu)

Awesome, I missed out on a few opportunities to test so right now I'm in the process or working towards my green belt. I don't think I'll be testing until December. Typically John Sepulveda (9th degree black belt) generally comes to our area 2 times a year and conducts test. Once in May and once In December. Of course, the instructors at any school can promote at any time they like, but I my instructor typically has me go to the Sepulveda seminars. It's just wonderous to work with Mr. Sepulveda and I go to the seminars even if I'm not testing!

The Colored belts test with sensei once every 2 months for a 3rd of a rank (If you know what you are doing you can get full ranks) But once you reach Brown Belt you must train with Kyoshii Jammant (7th Dan) and test afterwards. Overall a brown belt test for us is about 1-2 hours long because he holds two seminars afterwards. All of which are extremely helpful.

I absolutely LOVE the seminars! The nice thing about my instructor is that usually every class with him is a seminar in and of its own. This can get kind of frustrating sometimes, especially when you spend a few weeks on one concept when all you really want to do is learn the material you need for your next promotion, but deep down I know its better to fully understand one thing before you learn the next.

my instrucotr says the same thing of "one hit" phrase except he says if you dont "beat" them in 10 seconds or less than your dead. and every 2 months there shouldnt be a time specification because a blue belt should train way longer than white belt! ive been in taekwondo for 6 years and am a green belt blue stripe that has passed every test. my taekwondo doesnt have orange, purple, brown belts but have the otherones and we have stripes for each belt.

I love how most Goju ryu and Shotokan dojos get along very well, much like the founders of both systems. And the same goes with Goju ryu, except that we generate power from our stances and our breathing.
