One of the other posts in another thread got me thinking about all the good advice I've heard others in my art say...what are some of the words of wisdom you hear repeated in your school?
A few of my favorites:
"It isn't the size of the (wo)man in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the (wo)man."
"A Black Belt is the White Belt that never gave up."
This one is specifically taught to Orange Belts in Kenpo...I think it's a good one.
"To hear is to doubt, to see is to be deceived, but to feel is to believe." (My instructors like to say this right before they let us feel just how effective a technique REALLY is.)
"There are no pure styles of karate. Purity comes only when pure knuckles meet pure flesh, no matter who delivers or who receives."
AND MY FAVORITE!
"He who hesitates, meditates...in a horizontal position!!"
There are many more kenpo sayings, in fact, there are specific sayings associated with each belt level. They reflect or demonstrate the various concepts behind the different techniques that are being taught at the time. These are just a few I remember off the top of my head!

DesiBuu "To hear is to doubt, to see is to be deceived, but to feel is to believe." (My instructors like to say this right before they let us feel just how effective a technique REALLY is.) This one reminded me of a quote I know, as it is pretty much saying the same thing: "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." ~ Confucius

Here's a few quotes that I love:
"A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step." ~ Lao-Tzu
"It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up." ~ Vince Lombardi
"I have not failed 700 times, I have not failed once. I have succeeded in proving those 700 ways will not work. When I have eliminated the ways that will not work, I will find the way that will work." ~ Thomas Edison
"Only a warrior chooses pacifism; others are condemned to it." ~ Unknown
"The greatest power is often simple patience." ~ E. Joseph Cossman
This next one was said by my Sensei when a student answered his question "how many techniques exist in karate?" by saying that there was a "bunch of techniques":
ONE!... "There is only one technique... one single, fluid motion."

Bokuden "Instantanious adaptation to the unexpected is essencial... a "freeze frame" function of cognition can become a fatal handicap." I like that...it goes with the kenpo "He who hesitates, meditates in a horizontal postition." I still chuckle when I think about that!
