Ok, this one may sound a little odd but stick with me while I try to explain (I'm a little sleep deprived unfortunately)
Following a long somewhat rant filled conversation with my friends following our watching of a 2 minute interview with a comic book artist (I forget which one as I was only paying half attention, it was the conversation afterwards that grabbed my attention) The artist when asked who he prefered Batman or Superman picked Superman without hesitation. I have noted that this appears to be quite a common trait among American comic fans, especially the more patriotic ones. Now when the question is asked to a British comic fan the response is more often than not Batman. I know I'd pick the bat any day, I just find Superman overwhelmingly dull..
So, I was just wondering who you'd pick out of the two and where you're from. I'd also like to know who your other favourite characters are. I do not intend to be xenophobic with this thread in the slightest, please don't take offence. I was just curious, does your nationality have an impact on which types of comics you prefer to read and if it does why? Sorry, I have a real interest in psychology and the differences in cultures and have a habit of trying to combine as many of my interests in one go wink
Do any of you have any opinions on this?
Please feel free to rant at me for coming up with such a random post it's just that I personally found this conversation with my friends quite interesting..

First off, there is a thread somewhere on page 3 or 4 that lists all of the hometowns of most of the Kapow! members. You should check it out if you can find it (If I have the time I'll track it down and post the link too).
I'm from Minnesota, and if I had to pick between Batman and Superman, I'd pick Supes. In fact, my other screen name here in Kapow! is Linda Lee Danvers-the Silver Age Supergirl. I prefer my superhero fare to be lighter and fluffier and relatively angst-free-hence why I'm a huge fan of Mark Waid and his run on the Flash.
I own dozens upon dozens of Silver Age Batman comics, and I much prefer the man as a detective with a dash of heroics over the whole 'dark, angst-filled avenger' take on the character. Is this a regional thing? Perhaps. Minnesotans are known (supposedly) for their "Minnesota Nice' attitude.

Superman for me, mostly because I just think he's a better superhero and I've read more Superman comics that I've enjoyed than Batman. I should also add that one of the co-creators of Superman was Canadian, which is where I am from.

Thanks for the replies guys, and sorry I didn't spot the hometowns thread. I did go through a backlog of threads to make sure nothing similar had been posted in the past, guess my eyes failed me on that one! sweatdrop
Thanks for all the info too Wally. It is true that Superman is the lighter side of heroism, I sometimes enjoy things that are on the lighter side but I have never quite understood Superman and I'm not sure why.
Another theory me and my friends came up with is perhaps it's just a reflection of the reader, they want to see a bit of themselves in a comic, this of course would lead to a semi regional effect as certain areas will lend themselves to certain personalities and the like. I enjoy reading darker comics that make me think, perhaps my interest in batman is the fact I enjoy psychology and I enjoy trying to work out what is going on in the characters minds.
I'm probably making limited sense now, sorry if I'm being confusing!!

You don't need to worry about not making repeat topics here. With only a dozen or so of us posting constantly it's not like the threads are getting lost in a pile of "INUYAHSA RULEZ!" threads. 3nodding
I bumped up the Hometown thread, hopefully some of you new folks will reply, and I can update Rick's maps. smile

I was born in San Francisco, and I am enamoured with big cities. Sure, Supes has Metropolis, but he's just a big country kid. Batman's the city hero, and respectively, I am a woman, and I am a leo, and Catwoman is my number one.
I really can't think of any SF heroes, and if anyone else can, that'd be neat.

Isn't Coast City supposed to be DC's version of San Fran?

I prefer Bats to Supes, mostly because I grew up watching the old "Batman" TV show and Batman: TAS. I had exposure to Superman too, I was just never really interested in him. I think the primary reason is that I generally don't like most "leader" characters, whether it be Superman, Lion-O, Optimus Prime, etc. etc.
My favorite characters tend to be the "lesser" members of a team... probably because very few leaders tend to be "the funny one."
Background-wise, I grew up on a small island near Seattle, WA called Vashon.
Hmm, it'd be kinda cool to make a map of all the "comic cities." I'm not quite sure, but I think Dakota is supposed to be Detroit.

Keystone is Kansas City, and Central is...whatever's in Kansas across from Kansas city.
For years I believed them to be in Minnesota given Wally's 'midwestern' attitudes and constant references to them being Twin Cities.

Wally_West Keystone is Kansas City, and Central is...whatever's in Kansas across from Kansas city. I think Central is St. Louis which isn't too far from it. As for me, I'm a Batman kind of guy. I attribute it to being the son of a huge Batman fan. Also I like the idea that Batman is a superhero that a person essentially could actually become. If anyone is curious, the radio show This American Life did an episode on superheroes and one of the stories was about someone named Zora who actually did do her best to become a real life superhero. I would be more than happy to link people to the episode if you're interested. In an interesting note relating to heroes from various cities, Dan Clowes, creator of Eightball, has a really obscure comic he got in the 80s that declares that every city has a superhero. Apparently Baltimore is protected by the Purple Unicorn. I kid you not.

Hmmm Bats vs Supes... Kinda a toughie. I spose I could weigh out what I like about each but to save us all time I think I would have to say Batman. So who knows if it's a regional thing. Wally and I are practically neighbors, so to speak, and we have different prefrences. *shrugs*

well im kinda the opposite of static shock over there... i prefer the more inpirational leader types - the ones everyone else on the team can look to in times of crisis, the ones who cant seem to do anything wrong. they give everyone else, hero or otherwise, someone to emulate.. a standard to try n live up to. in the dcu, nobody fills this role more than superman.
this of course, isnt to say that batman doesnt do all that in his own arena.. its that supes does this on a more global scale surprised also, the thing that made bats exceptionally cool to me was that he was an urban legend - his own city wasnt sure if he even existed... thats not the deal now after what they made happen in war games sweatdrop
also, at the end of a hard day of superheroing... who still smells pine-fresh? superman, thats who.
on another note, virgil, how can u not like optimus prime?? he's who all the dudes wanted to be like & all the ladies (arcee) wanted to be with. u saw what he did to megatron... if it werent for that punkass hotrod, he'd b alive n kickin rite now.
