Firstly, hello - and welcome to the guild.
Very new and we're covering a bit of a niche here with the silents but I feel there's a resurgence (is that just me?) and we'll progess.
Anyway, you know how it goes.
Tell us a bit about yourselves. Name, age, what brings you here, how did you get into the silents, other interests - and the like.

Made this guild for obvious reasons. Love the silent pictures but couldn't really find anywhere to go on about them.
How I got into them - to be honest, couldn't really say, if you can believe that. Always loved the older films. Ahhh, me and TCM. I suppose the first time I got into them was watching the comedies of an early morning. They used to play lots of Harold Lloyd.
Family or friends won't give silent films too much of a chance so you see, it get's to be a lonely passion. More reason for guild. We all like to talk about the things we go mad for.
Other interest are very basic: I like to draw a little, I like music but I won't be specific with genres anymore, I've taken to reading more recently. I'd like to be well-read.

I got into silents about five years ago when I caught Modern Times on TCM. I developed a Chaplin obsession from there, which later branched out into a love of other stars and genres. I've even gotten my boyfriend into them a bit!
My other interests are music, sewing, Blythe dolls, politics, and Alice In Wonderland. I love going to shows and going for walks by the creek. I've been trying to read more lately too, but it's hard with the computer right in my room!

Not sure how long ago I got into silents but I remember the first one I saw was Laugh, Clown, Laugh. I loved it and started to watch for other silents to be playing on TCM. Never caught any on so gave up on silents for a few years until I saw College with Buster Keaton and after that I kept finding Buster Keaton films on all the time so that started my obsession with him.
I've tried to branch out to other Silent Film starts but its difficult since I can never seem to catch them on TV, there is no movie theatre that plays old movies anywhere close to where I live, I have no money to buy silent dvds, and I'm the only one I know that likes silents except my 103 year old great grandmother. But I have branched out into somewhat newer, non-silent movies with Marlon Brando or Fred Astaire in them. Still the only one I know that likes them but they're played on tv more than the silents.
Haven't been on Gaia very much at all in the past half a year or so but will check in occasionally and just happened to check today when I got this guild invite. So if I disappear for long periods of time sorry. I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing in college and dealing with the day to day.

I'm 46, and I've loved silent movies for a long time, starting with the comedies.
Finding out Turner Classic Movies frequently does "Silent Sunday" features at midnight on Sunday nights helped me see lots of new ones of all sorts. I think it's interesting to watch these early filmmakers finding ways to creatively express what sound effects and voice couldn't. They were getting very creative by the time sound came along--and knocked back movie evolution for a while. lol

I saw clips of silents on AMC and became captivated by the elegance of the films. My BA, and the MA I'm currently at work on, are in cinema and film disciplines. So, I may go off on some long winded, technical schpeals. wink
I'm big on silent comedies and German Expressionism, which I know are the cliche hooks to the era, but they're none the less great. My favorite silent films are Fritz Lang's Metropolis (192 cool and Girl Shy (1924), which stars Harold Lloyd. Although, my favorite silent actor is Buster Keaton.
I'm excited to talk silent film stuff in the forums with you all.

The first silent film I saw was Metropolis as well. There was a local tv channel that seemed to only own that, Faust, and The Cabinet of Dr Caligari and they would loop them. When I got old enogh to venture out on my own I went to the Silent Movie House in LA for a Lon Chaney double feature and I was hooked!
