I agree completely. Melies films are definately captivating (and very charming).

I think I like Victor Sjöström best and the way he made good use of the environment, you know, nature, the weather and the like. I just get a feeling of clearer rawness and realism in his films. I think they're very easy to emote to. The Wind especially made a real impact on me the first time I saw it.
A word for Browning though as well. Such atmospheric films. Always so dank and sinister. Obviously The Unknown's a massive fave but I do want to give The Show a mention too. I liked that one.
