I saw that in someone's sig and it got me to thinking, maybe there's a point to it. Cuz in a way people become so focused, so obsessed with their cultures that you might as well say it's a cult.
Cults=Bad!
Of course there's tons of people who would strongly disagree with me, and I wanna hear your opinions
Are people too hellbent on living their culture instead of living their life? How far is too far?

hmmm good question. Here's my opinion on the subject.
Culture is the way a certain group of people act, which would be natural. Now if one tries to align himself to the idea of the country, takes it too far, such an such, then it becomes a fad. I suppose one would say fad's are bad.
A culture is just a cultur till a foreigner tries to have a taste, or tries to hard to become what it repreent. But I love foreigners. In any form, i guess it's overkill.

Grand Styles hmmm good question. Here's my opinion on the subject. Culture is the way a certain group of people act, which would be natural. Now if one tries to align himself to the idea of the country, takes it too far, such an such, then it becomes a fad. I suppose one would say fad's are bad. A culture is just a cultur till a foreigner tries to have a taste, or tries to hard to become what it repreent. But I love foreigners. In any form, i guess it's overkill. See the thing is, it may be someone's culture, but a lot of people live that culture because they have to, or think they have to, knowing that in their heart it's not them, that they want something else in life, and by doing that. they're hiding their true identity and trying to be someone they're not. Fads aren't really....bad...exactly, but by following fads you're losing your originality. So I guess you can say that's bad. At least to me. I personally don't think it's wrong to have one little taste of a culture as long as you don't try to live what you learn if you know what I mean.

Yeah, I know a girl who is falling victim to this. Her family is from Assyria, and its their culture for her to marry another Assyrian. She's met this dude, known him for 1month... and both their parents have arranged their marriage.
I'm like WTF?? BUt unfortunately she is falling victim to a culture, which DEFINITELY does NOT let her express her own originality. Let along the fact that in the Assyrian culture, the women are completely subservient to the men. Its completely ridiculous... but of course, I wouldn't understand cuz I'm black.... psssht.
I say culture is hella cool.... but when culture become conforming, then thats hella whack.

The only Cult i know of is the Cult crew in L.A. which stands for Charged Up Like Thunder, Caught U Lookin' Twice, and so on. Graff crew by the way.

The are basically underground religions. xd
So since they are underground, then perhaps they are better than mainstream religions.

I say culture is hella cool.... but when culture become conforming, then thats hella whack. one of the biggest reasons me and my exgirlfriend parted ways was because she worried a lot about what her fam would think. She knew that if her Mong fam found out about white me then she would become disgraced. So we were together in secret for over a year and the stress got to her. Good memories though, used to have tp pick her up at a bus stop three blocks from her house. Anyway, they much rather would have preferred her marrying her 35 year old 3rd cousin.

We need culture, but not to the point where it become fanatascism...(sp?). Without culture there really isn't a point to living and too much culture results in desputes, but culture has always been generated from disputes, hmm. *ponders*

That makes perfect sense! surprised Serveral cults use ritual suicide. And self mutilation to reach enlightenment. There's a cult that requires you to drill a hole in your skull. Yay anthropology! And everyone knows, mainstream = bad of course. Everyone has a culture. Even if it's one of your own design. But, most recognized cultures are ways for certian groups to band together and identify with each other. It gives them a sense of belonging. But it IS importiant for people to remember that a person's culture isn't all they are. It's simply a part of who they are. But yes, I would say that many people fall victim to strict cultural norms. Such as the examples given about marriage. Did I mention I was a social work major yet? whee

Any organized religion was initially a cult was it not? a cult being a new and generally small religion not taken in by the main stream. hence christianity 1970 years ago was a cult. though it had a much different goal then that of "the family" and the leaders... despite both having long hair and beards... well jesus was a jew and darker in complexion and had no swastika carved in his head, not to mention didn't have a thing for killin' folks.
