What do you people think of when it comes to the origin of taekwondo becuase based on other forums it sounds like we would get killed easily

I can't be certain of it's orgins, but what I have heard was that it was taught to horse bound soldiers as a secondary defense, where they knocked off their own horses in battle. I don't know how accurate this is.

As for TKD getting you killed, I doubt that is very likely, kicks have their advantages in fist to fist combat...the biggest being a distance advantage.

I must point out that kicks aren't going to do you much good if you get taken down to the ground (I've heard something like 80-90% of street fights end on the ground) and it's good to know how to defend yourself from all positions.

What keeps you alive is the instinct to stay ahead of the game by using any means you can! (You aren't generally taught to bite or scratch in Martial Art forms, but you bet your @$$ if I were losing the fight, I'd bite the Hell out of anyone!) Obviously though, we can't use some tactics in our training. LOL!

It's best to pick the martial art that feels right to you, because ultimately confidence in your abilities and comfort in your art will keep you confident in yourself if ever the time comes!

My boyfriend and I actually met at our karate school. Not only is he a black belt in kenpo but he trained in muay thai and was a wrestler in high school....not to mention he out weights me by about 60lbs...

Even though he's a much more skilled fighter then I am, he has a hard time holding me down (much to my disgust he thinks it funny to tickle me) because he knows that if he gets anything remotely close to my teeth, chances are, it will be bitten.

I got him good once just on the inside of the bicep, which is a very sensitive area...if you don't believe me, just pinch yourself on the inside of your arm about 2 inches above your elbow...that's where I left a nice purple imprint of my teeth..

grrr...that will teach the bastardo to tickle me!! pirate

What I've heard is that TKD comes from two different ancient korean styles and it has influence from japanese karate.

Now the kind of TKD I've been talking about is the one you see in every corner... I've personally visited about 7 schools here in P.R. and I've been to a few tournaments where many schools come together for competition and honestly, none of them are what I would consider a martial art. They were all just another sport.

Care to clarify on the origins of Tae Kwon Do? =)

starting from General Choi he intermixed various forms of martial arts such as karate and collided them to make an EXTREMLY powerful moves. Hence it was used and trained for in the Korean war. The taekwondo that people see everywhere are NOT apart of original, direct taekwondo they are basicly "belt factories" that gurantee a blackbelt in years instead of working for it. One tournament i went to there where only 3 girls in my age group one of which my sister. She(my sister) had to vrs. the other chick. It was almost funny because the other chick could not doing anything:belt factory. Anyway, lol, the current holder of "chief" taekwondo leader is Mack Newton. He has trained directly from the 3 prievious leaders, he first is (general choi). So we are being taught 3rd generation moves.

wow...seven year old black belt huh? that's a joke!

here, we find that often times people get promoted around the same time that they are starting to lose interest in the classes. The instructors promote them as a means of keeping them interested in taking classes which translates to making more money.

Totally lame!

Well, there are some little girls in my school who are black belts. But let me tell you! They are STRONG little girls! I was wrestling with one of them yea know, Going easy and such so that I don't hurt them. Next thing I know, I'm in the air!! I learned my lesson my being beat up by a lot of little girls. crying My Instructor says, "Its not the size that matters, Its the strength." Guess I learned that the hard way.. crying
