How they had gotten onto the topic, neither one could remember. And how they felt comfortable when it came up was a mystery.
"So... not at all?" he asked, leaning forward slightly. He studied her, the way she sat far back in her chair, hands clasped in her lap. She raised her head and looked him in the eye. It was unnerving for a split second.
"No, not 'not at all'. It's just--I dunno. It's...frustrating." She pursed her lips.
"Frustrating?" he said with a short bark of laughter. "How is it frustrating? It's so easy!"
"Is not. It's complex and I don't understand it." she said.
"How is it complex? It's one of the most basic things in the world." He shook his head is a sagely manner.
"No it's not. It makes no sense. Pleasure has no reason."
"What?"
"It's not like pain. Pain is simple. It hurts because it shouldn't happen." She reached over his desk and pulled at his hand. He tensed for a moment, but then let his arm be pulled out straight, a wary eye trying to catch her's again.
"Bones." she said, curling a slender finger around one of his and pulling back on it gently. "They're meant to give structure to the body, to hold us up." She tightened a fist around his finger. "when they break, it hurts; it's not what they're for."
She reached over with her other hand and turned over his arm.
"Skin is meant to be waterproof protectant, keeping your insides inside. When split," she trailed a fingernail along his thick veins, "It hurts. Skin is supposed to stay in tact."
"Are you saying you would prefer pain?" he asked in a low whisper.
"I'm saying it's simpler to understand. Why is a kiss pleasurable? A touch? I cannot wrap my mind around pleasure."
He shifted his hand and rolled it into a fist around her fingers. He began to squeeze. He watched a blush touch her cheeks. Their eyes met sharply.
Finally, he released her fingers and withdrew his arm. Her nail scraped against his palm as he did so and a shudder ran through him.
Without another word, she rose from her chair and walked out of his room.
He laid his forehead on his desk and exhaled deeply the breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding.
