yo well i was rereading furuba and i noticed a couple things like shigure is yuki's cousin, and in the beginning shigure calls tohru, tohru-kun. like she's a boy.
okay so you can post things you've notice too! blaugh

Well, Tohru is a boy's name after all so, possibly, calling her -chan (is that right? I don't know all of the ending thins sweatdrop ) would be/could be socially awkward.

In the 13th volume. Where Tohru goes to see Kureno, and that lady is all "Is someone there" and Tohru's all "Holy crap(not literally)" and Kureno comes and he's all "It is me." and the lady's all "Oh Kureno! Come in!" And he's all "No. I must go now. Akito will be worried." And she's all "O_O"
That lady, is Akito's mother.

ninja Oh yeah - I'd already read the spoilers before reading that but I didn't realise they had the same voice. One thing I've noticed is that the American editions don't appear to have the "cultural notes" like the UK editions do. For instance, my American friend didn't know that Yankee means skank/scruff in Japanese, lol. They call Outani a "Yankee". And yes Tohru is called Tohru-kun because of her name normally being a boys name.

It is not a Japanese word, it is an english word that they use. I own two dictionaries to help with my translations of this very series and it is not a Japanese word, and I've just looked in another two and its not there either. When it appears in Japanese text Yankee is written ヤンキー. It's spelt with katakana which is used for foreign words. It is not a Japanese word. If yankee is a Japanese word then please find me a page of Furuba where it is used (Japanese), the dictionary that its in and the translation of it.

And whoever said that her name is a guy's is correct too. Now the more logical reason is for the -kun sufix is because it's to show some form of respect. -kun: Is often used for boys but can be used on girls. To show some affection and is higher than -chan. Ex: Sohma-kun Kyo-kun Tohru-kun Sephiroths samurai girl, Yankee is a word the Japanese use. Yankee would be our way of calling somebody "Gangsta". It's slang for refreance to a female thug. Even though Uo used to be a "Yankee", she doesn't seem to mind being called that. I don't know if you've ever realized this, but the UK and America have two compleatly difrent Englishes. The grammers a bit differant than American English. For crying out loud, they call the ocean seperating America and Europe a "pond". They have some odd words for things we use, like a rain coat, and parking lot. And Kidney pie is a very disrespectful word for our friends across the ocean. So if we did have to have our mangas be translated in Britin, they will most likely be translating them in British dialict. And then when they are sent here we'd have to change the translation even more so we could understand what the heck the British did to the Japanese translations. One of the main reasons that's hard to translate Japanese to English is because of how it's printed and the words. The Japanes have words that we don't have in English. Plus, when they get the words translated the word buble is eather to big or too small so not to make the manga look more like poo, they make the picture smaller and bubble bigger or just fill in the space. On top of that we have to reverse the pictures. Ex: Kyo was wearing a shirt that said "MAY" now in the English (if they went and printed the manga our way of reading) Kyo's shirt would now read "YAM". Honestly, in my opinion, America should just print it the way the Japanese intended. A lot less hastle. So please do your research first. I learned this stuff from reading information on the mangas that give the infomation like some of Clamps's work, and the componiy that prints out Negumi (that wizard kid, who's about ten or twelve, when ever he sneezes makes girls cloths rip to shreds and is a teacher), and the website of TokyoPop before they went to hell.

I don't know what you're trying to correct me about becuase I agree with you. sweatdrop It is a word the Japanese use and it is used for gang members like what Arisa used to be. And yes I do realise American English is different to British English, I speak to Americans everyday. I don't know why you're bringing any of that up though, it has nothing to do with the fact that both the UK and US get the Tokyopop version and so there wouldn't be TNs in one and not the other. (And since when was kindney pie disrespectful? I've never heard that before. How is it disrespectful? Didn't know some called it a "pond" either. O.o) To be honest, the way it's printed doesn't make it that much more difficult to translate. The expressions do sometimes make it difficult, but there's normally an expresion in English that will get across the same message. I would have to say the two "alphabets" and the Kanji make it most difficult.(Katakana espexially imo.) And you'd be surprised how nicely the text fits into the bubbles, its actually pretty rare to get a bubble too big or too small. At least for this series it is, if the text ends up larger in the English its quite often because the Japanese was larger too so its made just as large to match up. Why are you telling me all this about publishing anyway? I never mentioned it once. Most manga is now "un-flipped" too. What exactly are you telling me to do my research on? I agreed with you on the Yankee thing and everything else you've posted is irrelevant to my posts. I've been translating this series for fans for about a year now so I've learnt a fair bit about the Japanese language (or I'd be a pretty poor translator!).
