In 1924 Albert Ostman with the help of an indian guide went in search of a lost gold mine near Toba Inlet in British Coloumbia. Having arrived at his intended destination his indian guide left him and said he would be back to check on him in three weeks. Ostman set up his camp and settled down for the night. He woke in the morning to find his food pack had been ransacked even though it was out of scavenger reach. The next night he tucked his pack and rifle into the sleeping bag with him determened to catch the "thief". He soon fell asleep.
Ostman was jerked awake when something gathered him up "like a puppy in a bag". At first he thought he had been flung on a horse but said he could feel whatever it was walking. Scrunched in a ball at the bottom of his sleeping bag clutching his rifle, his legs numb and canned goods gouging him in the back was finally set down a few hours later. It was still dark all he could hear was chattering in some odd language. As dawn broke he found he was in the presence of four large hairy creatures. Two adults (male and female) and two "little" ones (male and female). At first the two young ones were afraid of Ostman and the adult male was the "one to worry about". Ostman discovered that he was in a basin surrounded by mountains with a small opening that served as an entrance and exit. Everytime Ostman went to escape the male would put up his hands and say "Soka, Soka". Gradually losing it's fear the young male tried to make friends with Ostman by offering him a root of some kind, so Ostman gave the young bigfoot a little chewing tobaco. The little bigfoot became sick when it ate it. This gave Ostman an idea.
Later that day he gave a whole tin of snuff to the male bigfoot who immedeatly started rolling around in pain. Ostman wasted no time in grabbing his things and high-tailing it out of there. The adult female gave chase. He shook her pursuit by firing his rifle and scaring her off. He ran for hours escaping with a fantastic story he would not tell for thirty years.
