I'm going to start this thread with a little, and kind of embarrassing story!

We recently moved from a cramped apartment into a much larger house. Having finally acquired a place of our own, my boyfriend (also a Karate Man) and I were now able to hang the 100lb heavy bag in our basement.

A few weeks ago, I was downstairs doing laundry when I decided I'd give the bag a go round. I ran upstairs, grabbed some bag gloves from my gym bag and ran back down.

After 10 minutes or so, I was feeling pretty warmed up and energized and started putting a little more 'umph' into it. Then, I got the most blonde idea I've had in quite some time. I stepped back into an agressive neutral bow and then, with all the power I could muster, I laid a right rear roundhouse kick square into the bag.

Oh, yeah...did I mention I was barefooted on a slick concrete floor?

Before I could rebound, the force of the kick moved through the bag and redirected itself into my own body. Like a lightening strike, the energy whisked my planted left foot out from under me and all I knew was that I was going down.

I landed on my right wrist (the one I've fractured a few times) and proceeded to land smack on my @$$. redface

Just as quickly as I'd fallen to my feet, I had bounced back up and was running up my stairs to grab the ice pack.

Ultimately, a lack of good traction and possibly bad stance resulted in a jambed shoulder.

My massage therapist (also a Tai Chi instructor) said it could have been worse, at the angle I fell, had I landed either a fraction of an inch to the left or right of the palm of my hand I would have shattered my wrist and dislocated my shoulder. sweatdrop Thank god I was taught the proper way to take a fall!

Anyway, this bring me to my question and the topic of this thread; what sports medicine techniques do you employ?

For said case, I used a remedy called Arnicare, made from the flowers of the Arnica plant. It works way better then Tiger Balm without the scent. (sometimes it's not good to reek like cinnamon and clove) Though I must say, Tiger Balm is the Shiznit too!

I also blend a lot of my own massage oils (if you're interested I can give recipes) for working out sprains that require a little bit of deep tissue thearpy.

Anyway, I'm curious, what do you guys do when you get injuries?

You really should be careful on concrete eek

I've never really gotten "hurt", per say... aside from a few minor sprains... for them I just use a bag of ice and maybe some tiger or dragon balm. =)

Y'know, now that I think of it, I've never broken, twisted or dislocated anything... I must be really lucky XD

Well I'm super clumsy at Martial arts. I've sprained my ankles about 3-4 times. When I do kicks I usually lose my balance and hurt myself sweatdrop . This one time when I was sparring with this dude, I tried to do a back moon kick....And my feet didn't hold to the ground very well.. So I flew up and landed straight on my bottom...I was as embarrassed as heck cause the guy was kinda cute. So the pain didn't bother me until the next day. I ended up having a bruise on my bum and it really hurt when I sat down >_<'. I regularly get bruises on me as if I'm being abused(which I am not!!) And most of my injuries are from myself basically. biggrin

USUALLY....but not always, I'm pretty lucky in Karate. My injuries tend to be minor briuses from partners that get overzealous and forget to pull punches. I just rub out the briuse before it totally forms. I did make one vital mistake when I had just started karate again. While sparring with a friend who was a muai thai student I blocked his roundhouse kick with a downward outward block...and didn't tense my wrist. I refractured it and it briused from my wrist all the way up to my elbow. I just iced it for 20 mins. Heated it for 10, rubbed it for 10 and repeated for the rest of the night. I didn't realize at the time it was actually refractured so now I really have to keep the muscles loose in order to keep it from hurting. Every couple of weeks my massage therapist has to reset it in place sweatdrop so that I can actually use my full range of motion...

Needless to say, lesson learned.

I also learned that day that I have a glass jaw...I walked right into Brians warmup kick and even though he only tapped me, it hit just right and knocked my jaw into my nerve and I waws KO'd...

2nd lesson learned...

Maybe what you're lacking is a good stance... talk to your sensei about it, maybe he can help you ^_^

Yeah, it really wasn't a KO but a knock down...and I was loopy for a while... I couldn't stop laughing...then I just felt detatched from everything. But it wasn't a concussion cause the only applied abou a lb of pressure...it was just that he hit the exact right spot.

I was able to finish sparring with him; but, the KD really messed with my head.

At least if I ever get hit and it happens again, I know what to expect and can work through it.

I've broken almost all my bones (that you can without permanent damage), i have broken all of my ribs at least twice, some three or four times, but the sad part is, is the fact that my parents were so busy thinking about themselves, and not paying attention/caring about me, that if you asked my mum if i have broken anything, she would say no, i mean i tried to hide my broken bones, but c'mon, i think my mum still hates me crying , o well, also cus of my gang fighting ive been shot, more thimes than i can remember (mostly cus half of the times the bullets don't really hit, they just graze, thankfully!!!! sweatdrop ) I've also been stabbed, cut, and if you read my why i fight, then you also know that my heart stopped for about an hour

Well nothing special about my ribs, just from training, this will only make sense if you read why i do what i do, but after my sensei left, i still continued training with my team, but only one of em is actually good at hand-to-hand, but whoever i spar with, i guess you can say that "limiters" are off, all of my spars have been real, not holding back, and going full out, mostly though my ribs have been broken by kicks, punches really dont do much, unless your punching some one on the ground...then that hurts

Ugh, not nice, it comes with the whole gang thing. The one thing that gangs like to do the most is torture people, and me being the extremely overprotective person i am, i decided at one point, that instead of letting my friends get hurt, that i would go and give myself up, but only to be rescued by my team later ((cheesy i know, but im not very creative)) but the thing that i miss calculated was how long they would torture me. One of the most painful things was the breaking of my femur, as you can imagine it's really quite easy to break when you can lay your opponent down and just stomp on their femur all you want, bad memories, but in the end it's all worth it, lol any other stories you wanna hear?

I'm pretty impressed with the gang members, I must say. It takes 550lbs of pressure to break the femur bone; it's the strongest bone in the body aside from the scapula.

Lol, i know, they put my upper body, all the way down to my hips, up on support, left a gap between my femur and put more support after my knee to my feet, so my whole body was supported above the ground, with a gap in the support where my femur was, now i suspect that they dropped somethings on me, but i wasn't sure, i was face down, either way it was horrible
