I'm sure that we've all been wondering this. After all we don't hear anything at all about his childhood in the books. So maybe we should make an educated guess.

I bet he was really quiet. And his mother might have kept him hidden so that his father would not kill him.
And when he did get out humans followed him everywhere because of how pretty he is. mrgreen

He was probably that really quiet kid on school that all of the goth/emo girls and maybe even guy dream about.

Acctually in one of the books it sort of gives you a glimpse of what D was like. It was Pilgramage of the Sacred and the Profane, I beleive. He tells the girl that her child will be born in about six months and he sort of tells her that he will be very caring and attentive to her. So I beleive that he was like that when he was young. The question I have is what happened to make him so cold?

Well towards the end he says somethings that will sort of give you a little look into what he was like. I mean how else would he know that unless he was the same way. Right?
