a little while ago i asked my girlfriend if she liked david bowie, and she replied "who?".

...

i know, right?

like the 16th century european explorers who were shocked to discover that native americans had never even heard of jesus, let alone worship him, i decided that her crime was only the crime of ignorance.

so i educated her, and thankfully she now knows and likes bowie. but that got me thinking, what if she hadn't?

i think i'd genuinely struggle with news like that. it'd be like the song "five years".

"pushing through the market square,
so many mothers sighing,
news had just come over,
we had five years left of crying.

news guy wept and told us,
she's really not so fond of bowie,
cried so much his face was wet,
then i knew he was not lying."

(a little dramatic i know, but that's how i roll... ;D )

My ex was always very against DB. One time he visited my office at work and I ws listening to DB, the song was DJ, and he looked and me and shook his head and said 'truly awful..' like he was trying to make me ashamed for liking this music. If I listened to it too much in the house he would say things like "that cr*p again?" or "or don't you get sick of that garbage" so it became where I had to hide what I was listening to! (this was during that rough 2003 - 2005 period that I have mentioned before... so needless to say he was part of my troubles back then. he didn't treat me very good and was not very supportive of who I am as a person...hence why we are not together!)
My husband on the other hand endulges my love of DB! He bought me Labyrinth for my PSP as a birthday present! So I can watch it where ever I go! xd And he likes and appreciates DBs music. I've exposed him to lesser known Bowie tracks over the years and it has grown on him a lot..

aww... that's good to hear. i had an ex like that. she'd insist on playing kings of leon ALL the time. i had to go out the house for long walks with my mp3 player just so i could listen to some of my own music.that relationship had plenty of other problems though. oh well. live and learn.

Yea, I just don't think it could ever work if you don't love, accept and respect the person you're with for who they are as a whole...

I should have been a pair of ragged claws

Your question cannot be computed. The only person I ever have loved -- and ever will love -- is David Bowie himself. Whether or not he likes himself is not a factor.

xd

Seriously, though. I wouldn't mind if my significant other didn't like Bowie's art, but he would have to be okay with me liking it. And he would have to tolerate me constantly shoving it in his face that Bowie is the foundation of all rock and pop.

He would also have to support that, should Bowie ever show up to ask me to marry him (or perhaps take me away to live in his castle in the goblin city), I would immediately ask for a divorce, etc.

Kidding. Sort of.

I totally feel for you, here. Every boyfriend I've ever had has teased me about my love for "an old man", especially one who wore tights throughout so much of his career.

It's jealousy, I'll swear it. ;D

Aww, well now you have us, so chat with us whenever you like!

I feel your pain. I put up with all my friends' yucky music (rap and pop and etc music from today - ICK mad I don't like today's music at all) but the second I mention Bowie, they all start rolling their eyes! grrr

It's a rare occurrence that someone can know me for more than a few weeks without either developing a taste for his music or leaving forever. I don't intentionally push my preferences in peoples faces or even talk about them all that much but I must emit some kind of subliminal messaging that tells people to love Bowie, read Ender's Game, and burn every copy of Twilight they come across.
Only my best friend doesn't like him (weird I know, I think she's developed an immunity to my secret power.) and we have fake fights about it all the time.
No guy who did not at least like David Bowie would last around me.

I am very open with what my boyfriend likes and he is the same with me. So I wasn't really that surprised when he didn't know who DB was when we started dating. And I didn't have the time to show him for like half a year ((bcus I'm a band nerd and had practice)) and that was back when I had my REALLY old computer and I couldn't get on the internets to show him. So, he is just now able to appreciate the super special awesomeness that is DB.

And I have him absolutely hooked to Labyrinth. XD

Sadly, my fiance had not yet been exposed to the Greatness that is David Bowie when we first started dating. I seem to remember him picking on me a fair amount. He thought the only notable thing about Bowie was that he did a song with Queen, but then he said that "Queen did it better," whatever that means.

It took at least a year, but I finally was able to convince him of David Bowie's awesomeness. We listen to Bowie all the time now, and he even knows a lot of the lyrics. He even let me name our cat Bowie. biggrin

Not loving (or at the very least, liking) him would like not loving me... cause he's such a big part of me... so no I don't think I could be with someone that didn't understand that part of my life...

LoL, I've never known a person to not know "who" David Bowie is so suggesting that someone does and doesn't like him I can confirm "Yes, I could love someone that didn't love David Bowie." The suggestion of love is the appearance and/or hidden knowledge of the fact or suspicion of the fact of/or affection or a affinity of or for something. Yes the inclined fact is true that I listen to David bowie and love his music. Not having many Conversations with the man inclines I can only state I love his music. Only after living with someone/something for a long period of time can one only state that one loves something or some one. With that said My appreciation for someone that doesn't or doe's love David Bowie is only limited to Bowie's wife and instinctively I can only say Yes to this question, because many things and people I know does not love or doesn't know if they do in fact love the man or in fact just love Bowie's music or said physiologic intentions of loving said Bowie.

....That means yes I do love people that don't love Bowie.

My ex introduced me to Bowie, something I'm eternally grateful to her for.
I don't know how I'd react if someone I loved didn't love the Bowie... It would be... strange, to say the least. I mean, I only know one person who doesn't like DB and she and I haven't spoken in quite a while...
