What's more important liking the music, or dressing for it? When I was in highschool, I saw nothing but rejection because I didn't dress the part. Does it matter people wear? What do you think? Do you criticize kids at shows who aren't as hardcore, or as punk, etc, as you? The way I see it, not liking what they wear does not question there right to be there.

In my opinion, people can wear whatever they want. Wheather they enjoy the genre or not it doesn't matter. People should be comfortable in what they wear. I don't determine who is a poser and who isn't by what they wear but what their thoughts on music are and if they claim to be something and aren't.

The only thing that bothers me when it comes to clothes is when people wear band shirts of bands they don't know s**t about. When it comes to the punk genre, everyone wears Ramones shirts. I'll ask them "Oh! You like the Ramones?" and they will only be able to name one song which is "I Wanna Be Sedated" (of course) and know nothing else if anything at all. That's the only thing that bothers me.

It's cool the wear the s**t and all, but one thing ******** pisses me off.

- When those preppy girls run around in the halls with a Ramones or The Clash shirts and wearing it just for the sake of vintage and not because of their kick a** music, I just wanna rip it off their size 40 DD chests and kick their a**.-

I think it's just about the music, but man, I look like a punk rocker (I've been told), so it doesn't matter.

I listen to the music. And, if I do say so myself, I know a lot about it maybe. But when it comes to the "punks" at my school who b***h about poseurs, most of them are in it for the fashion or because they think it is a cool justification to smoke weed. Most of them do not even listen to the music--they listen to death metal stuff. The few that do listen to the music listen to newer stuff with no background on the older stuff and say that they are fans of "old punk," even though the only old punk band they listen to is The Ramones, the rest is just The Casualties.

But I am not called a punk because:
a. I've got the straight edge.
b. I dress on a budget and as such cannot (and perhaps do not want) the punked-up goth/emo stylings even the punks who major diss (I diss on them too, but I try to be acceptant) on all the emo kiddies and poseurs wear. I do have a lot of band shirts though, but mostly from punk bands that are too old and as such have lost their street credibility.
and
c. I have kept with my same friends forever, who by the way are no punks...more labelled emo and weirdos and gothies...mostly weirdos XD, and, because of a and b combined with this not many so-called punks at my school like me. But all that suits me fine because when the local punk scene becomes another system of conformity, I do not want to be a part of that scene.

To be a true fan of ANY music you must at least listen to it. What percentage of your leisure time should be spent listening to it?I do not actually know. I have heard some fans claim most of your "music-listening" time should be spent listening to one genre like Ska-punk,(real) Emo (as in the Rites of Spring,etc.),Death-rock,etc. to be considered a hardcore fan of that genre.

When it comes to mallcores (posers), I am not a huge fan of them. I'm not prejudice, but I disapprove of people running around stating they are something when they prove they are not. Sure, people have the freedom to do that and I will not stop them because it interferes with peoples' "natural rights" and freedom of speech is a big thing in my country, but probably it would be easier if people talk the talk and walk the walk, too.

Well, there are several good points here.... these are the comments I remember wanting to make.

1. I'm not a big fan of the ramones, and I can name more then one song: Sheena is a punk rocker, That cover of spider-man they did, I wanna be sedated and blitzkrieg bob. I don't know how anyone can not know those songs. I know this doesn'T really have anything to do with what you said, I just felt like posting it, because i was proud for knowing as much. Oh yeah.

2. Well, kids in highschool do tend to try too hard.

3. Isn't it punker to dress from thrift stores. Like. Ohmygod.

4. Sorry, about the randomness of this post, I might add something more intelligent tomorrow, when I'm not so sleeeeepy.

You know... The term "Being a Punk" doesn't really mean anything to me more than, having an honest appreciation for the music Genre. I mean, people are always amazed everyday because I have an honest appreciation for Punk... being a black male. But see, I live hiphop... thats what I do, and who I am, and for me to also live for Punk is absurd in the eyes of so-called "Punkers". These are the cats that are Poseurs to me. Just because my style may be more than just Punk, doesn't mean I'm any less committed as a Punk fan.

I'll rock my hiphop LRG clothing, and toss a Op Ivy shirt on, cuz that represents me. I'm a mixture of Hiphop and Punk, among other things. And when I have so-called "True hardcore punkers" telling me that I'm not a real punker, WHEN they don't even know who Agent Orange is or Bad Brains, The Ramones etc... then it makes me laugh.

I honestly don't really like people who only like a band for the fact that all their friends like the band. And I don't admire people who don't know at least a vague history of a band...you know what year they started, how many members, how many CDs they have out...basic stuff...it annoys me cause I try to talk about something and then they don't know who or what I'm talking about. Like once this kid in my grade got into the Dresden Dolls and he only knew Coin Operated Boy and Girl Anachronism cause they were the singles off their first and only album. He walked out to get their CD and immediately found out that he really hated them...whereas when I got into the Dresden Dolls I went to their official site and listened to the songs on there as well as the two singles and got a better feel for their style and absolutely adore them now and want them to play in MN sometime soon ^^. That kinda of stuff pisses me off....
I kinda think of myself emo-punkish but I don't fall in a certain area cause I listen to punk, emo, techno, and metal....so I can't fall in one cause I don't listen to one the most...but at my school I am the Goth kid (I go to a 600 kid preschool-12 private school) and I don't listen to gothic music...so I'm always saying WTF? just because i dress in black and look sad doesn't automatically make me goth but I just curse at them and tell them they're preps..because they're spoiled selfish brats >< (most of 'em at least)
But I don't necesarily judge people on how they dress...it ain't who I am...I look at people and generally accept everything and wait to build opinions on the person(s).....If I first see someone and think 'oh they're goth' i don't usually keep that in mind all the time...its just a first thought and i don't ever say it outloud. I never hold my first thoughts.....its kinda weird =/

It is just like Goth or Emo. It's all about the music. If you listen to punk, you aren't a poseur in my mind. I could care less how they dress.

Exactamente! 3nodding

I was talking to one of my friends about bands and I was like "why should I dress the part when I know where I am with the music? I know my music and love it, but why should i dress it to prove it?"

But I do dress punkish somewhat. I'm one of the few girls in my school who wears a chain wallet, skater shoes, jeans almost every ******** day, and a black t-shirt... I might wear orange tomorrow.... I'm such a rebel.

Well, I guess that most of us agree. However... saying that you just "like the music" doesn't quite cut it either if you think about it. How many discussions have I heard about "what emo/punk/etc really is"? Too many. So maybe we should stop trying to classify things so much and just... go with the flow?

I personally get mad when people misgenre(my made up word) bands cause it pisses me off....I encounter so many people that say MCR are emo...it makes me mad...cause they don't get what real emo is...Iono maybe I should lighten up....
It personally bugs me...cause I've encountered people who think Simple Plan (honestly) are emo...that's an outrage to me and a shame to the genre...but maybe I'm crazy ><
it could always happen ><

hm. i think we should all be able to dress the way we want.
but..
im still in high skool && i hang around people that listen to basically everything ((except country)) && they all dress like Goth or with Band Tees i guess to show that they do listen to rock or whatever.
this year i was critizied fer wearing collared shirts from A && F becuz i listen to punk && all that stuff so in their minds i wasnt allowed to be wearing that.
which i think is so0o sterotypical of them.
i mean really... does in matter what i wear.??
not really.
i still wear like band tees && all that great stuff
but i sont understand why .. if youre not wearing a Ramones Tee or Sex Pistols Or the Clash. it means yer a poser.
but i think thats the same thing with every genre .
if yer a prep you wear certain clothes like Hollister && Forever 21 && A &&F...
if yer a skater.. Spitfire , Volcom, or Etnies stuff...
Rockers have to ((for some odd reason)) like to wear a lot of black or band tees
.. the list goes on..
so much for high school bein the best years of our life
when we get disowned if we dont wear the right clothes or act the right way according to the music we listen to.
