Hey!! Sorry I haven't been on in foreverrrr. (: (:

But I'm curious.

So my horse kept collapsing while I was on her last night and I was freaking out. We walked her around for awhile and she was fine. Back to normal. My trainer took her home and then in the middle of the night, she was thrashing and rolling. Trainer put her outside and she would trot a few steps and then collapes. The vet said it's not colic (like in the winter were she almost died) but he thinks it's an ulcer. My mom said taht it's treatable and that 37% of show horses have it.

Has your horse ever had one?? How are they now/?

I'm worried sad

Im sorry to hear that and no my horse has never had an ulcer, hopefully she never will.
Anyway, I read somewhere it is either due to the diet, exercise, enviornment, or is hereditary.
It is treatable and able to prevent.
I suggest doing research on this to get exact information
as well as consult with your vet as to the best course
for your horse. And most importantly read your horse they
will tell you everything you need to know.
I hope your horse recovers soon 3nodding

Oh no! Mine has never had that happen but I would take her/him to the vet immediately! If nothing else you'll know you've done the right kind thing to help it.

My mums horse had an ulcer in it's eye and now it's blind in that eye.we were away on holidays when our farm manager lit a bonfire.he locked our horses in the yards but reggie decided to jump the fence. he stayed far enough away from the bonfire but the next morning when it was ashes and still reasonably hot reggie went over to it and got a stick smothered in ash in his eye.our farm manager called the vet out and she gave him some stuff to numb the pain while we floated him to the equine hospital. thay had to operate on his eye and stuff. now he's got 1 blue eye instead of 2 brown. he's only got like 5% sight in that eye.

Gastric ulcers are surprisingly common in horses, with over 90% of them getting ulcers at some point in their lifetime [even if it isn't clinically diagnosed].
A lot of the time, it is due to diet and their living conditions - horses stomachs are designed to constantly have food in them, but the way that most people feed horses involves 2 or 3 "meals" per day.
A university lecturer of mine [she's an animal nutritionist] told me once that the best way to get rid of ulcers and keep them at bay is to feed horses the fuzzy yellow stuff on the inside of banana peels. Apparently it works a lot better than any of the very expensive ulcer treatments around [I haven't tried it myself - my horses have never had clinically diagnosed ulcers]. She swears by it.

Are you feeding your horse enough hay? A horse needs to eat 1-2% of its body weight every day, so for your average 500kg horse, they should be getting 5-10kg of feed, most of which should be hay. If you give your horse some cheap grass hay to munch on constantly, as well as small hard-feeds [with fuzzy banana bits in them smile ] it could help substantially with the ulcers.

Have a good chat to your vet about what the best ideas for your horse would be - every horse is different, and as one of the posters above me said, ulcers can be caused by a lot of different things [I just know about the nutritional causes].

Good luck, and I hope the horse gets better soon!!!
