I dispise summer reading assignments. They are always on boring books about real life, which I like to call "boo-hoo" books because the characters are always whining about their life. I want to read the books I like to read, not some retarded book about a dying cancer patient or lovesick girl! I want to read about vampires and complicated pasts and other century modern books!
Then, I'm always reading! I don't NEED to read and report on another book! Plus it's SO time-consuming. I want to go to the beach and swim! Not do boring homework assignments! This is my opinion on summer reading assignments.
What do you think? Do you think they are ridiculous? Do you believe they are helpful? Do you think they are a waste of time?

I don't care for summer reading, I've always already read something from the list. This year is Lord of the Flies, Brave New World, and 1984. I've read the first and last of those three years ago, but in general I grin and bear it. Also I guess I'm a tolerant reader because I didn't think to much of The Great Gatsby, but everyone else hated it! Oh well, I guess thing happen like that don't they?

I have to agree that it's time consuming. This year it's American Lit. That means William Shakespeare and the Bronte sisters. I love William Shakespeare, but I'm reading Wuthering Heights as my summer assignment. I've only read approximately one page and already I'm bored out of my mind. However, I do like reading and I like learning about other styles of writing, so I do it. (Even though I just started my book today and school starts in less than a week.)

I don't mind summer reading -- I mean, I'll read over the summer even if there's no assignment. I just generally don't like the books the teachers assign.

The last couple of years have been pretty good -- 1984 by George Orwell, Girl in Hyacinth Blue by Susan Vreeland (a lot of the guys didn't like this one; I enjoyed it, though), and The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien.

GiHB and TTTC both had weird timelines -- GiHB went backwards instead of forward, tracing back through the owners of a painting, and TTTC wasn't in any chronological order, really -- it was more a bunch of short stories with the same Company in the Vietnam War. It was really good; a lot of profanity, though, so if you don't like that, stay away.

@Edluver
American Lit = Shakespeare?
...not sure how that one works.

I'm in the same boat as ATW. I love reading. I don't mind reading books for school, but I just hate all the analytic work that comes after reading it. Is this foreshadowing, or is there a hidden meaning behind this one single phrase he says, or how many themes for this book can you come up with? UGH! Most authors don't even have themes in mind when they write the dang books! They just WRITE. I will never forget this: an author had come to a small high school once, and they were asking him questions. The English teacher decided to pipe in and asked, "What was the reason behind this certain theme and what did you wish to convey to your readers about said theme?" He was like, "Uh...I never planned it out like that. I just kind of wrote it."

English teachers make me despise the books I have to read for class. Books I would have otherwise loved become images of hatred because of all the pointless analyzing of themes and character flaws. Can't I just enjoy the dang book?
