So I am plotting to launch a web comic in the relatively near future. It all started when I did some guild comics for an old guild I was in on here, and I really learned a lot of spiffy tricks on MS paint and grew addicted to the whole process.
At first I used Gaia avatars- but I wanted to do my own comic and not have any copy right issues- so I've been working on a hand drawn comic which I scan in and color in the computer.
I wanted to get some opinions on comics you read and things you look for and enjoy:
What comics (web or other) do you read?
As a reader do you prefer:
- More detailed with less frequent Updates or Less detailed with regular updates?
- One shot jokes/storylines which are resolved in a single strip, or a comic that has a lot of continuity, storylines that span over days if not weeks?
-Pure comedy, or a blend of comedy and thought provoking?
-Comics with more art and less text, or comics with more text and less art?

I used to read this really awesome online comic called Inverloch by Thera Ellerton. She only released 2 pages every Monday and Thursday, so of course it took a while but she finally finished it. It was a really amazing story though, and the art was fantastic. Of course comedy is always good too, but the more dramatic stories stay with you longer...

AntoniaMerEnfant So I am plotting to launch a web comic in the relatively near future. It all started when I did some guild comics for an old guild I was in on here, and I really learned a lot of spiffy tricks on MS paint and grew addicted to the whole process. Antonia. . . you and I have had one of those brainwave things. . . cause I considered making this thread last night. . . Anyway! Question one: Right now, I relgiously read Finder's Keepers, Dominic Deegan, Red String, Girl Genius, and XKCD. Question two is related to the first. I obviously read the gamut. Finder's Keepers is scheduled for two updates a week, but Garth on occasion has to change that. But his art is so awesome, I give him the time I wait between pages. XKCD, Red String, and Girl Genius are all three days a week, and the art on Red String is beautiful, though only black and white. XKCD is stick figures. Dominic Deegan updates 5 days a week. Mookie has come a long way. Question three, my preference is obviously to the cannonical comics. Only XKCD is a real 'gag' strip. Each of the others have some great single panels or days though. Definitely a mix. Dominic Deegan has always been the mix of drama and comedy. Finder's Keepers is wonderful for the fact that turns of phrase become real. Red String has some cute and funny moments, and some harrowing ones. ((The extended plot about homosexual couples was wonderfully done!)) Girl Genius is also that mix of slapstick and continuity that keeps me coming. XKCD is just out and out funny. No plots. Oh, except when the main character raced Nathan Fillion on an electric skateboard. Art and text really depends on how they're mixed not their proportions. Oh, I also used to read The Devil's Panties religiously, now I just haven't had time. Jenny Breeden is one awesome lady, though.

I only really follow 2 comics.
Girl Genius due to the way it is an UTTERLY steampunkish comic, funny and yet with a GREAT story.
And The Whiteboard because it's less story driven and the main character is a LOT like a very good friend of mine. It doesn't make a lot of sense unless you have played/do play or know anything about paintball.

I read Dominic Deegan, XKCD, Girl Genius, Questionable Content, Phoenix Requiem, Looking For Group, and Mega Tokyo.
Dominic Deegan used to be my favorite webcomic. It started with a three-day-a-week update schedule, expanded to seven days a week, and has recently backed off to five. I hoped that the reduction in schedule would mean Mookie would be able to spend a bit more thought on his plot lines, get back the amazing characterization that he had at the start. Unfortunately it seems only to have slowed the decline in quality, not stopped it. The strengths of this one were strong, believable characters (both heroes and villains) and engaging story arcs. Somewhat episodic.
XKCD is a hilarious gag-a-day strip that updates three days a week. I don't always get the math involved, but there is enough that I do understand to keep me coming back. It is guaranteed to make me laugh out loud at least once a week. Best stick-figure art I've seen, and it nurtures my inner Hat Guy.
Girl Genius has some fantastic art (though it takes a while to take off) and a good storyline. It makes me laugh quite hard every so often, but also has its serious elements. Updates three days a week.
Questionable Content started as more of a gag-a-day idea, but it followed a group of characters. Both shorter story arcs and a unified story have evolved from that. The art has improved an unbelievable amount from the beginning to now, which is understandable since the author is entirely self-taught. This has replaced Dominic Deegan as my favorite webcomic. Began by updating three days a week, now updates five days a week.
Phoenix Requiem is by the same author as Inverloch, which I have also read. It is not episodic at all. The author has the entire story planned at the beginning of her projects. Her art is amazing, and the story is engaging. The characters are well-thought-out. I was quite upset with the ending of Inverloch, which I felt did not live up to the beginning or middle. I hope that Requiem does not go the same route. It updates with two or three pages twice a week.
Looking For Group I like for the way it is both a gag-a-day and a story-driven comic. It pokes fun of everything, and again makes me laugh. Updates twice a week.
Mega Tokyo is story-driven. The ridiculousness of that story keeps me reading, even though it drives me insane. There is no regular update schedule. It generally updates about once a week, but there is really no way to know.
When I find a new webcomic, it has 30 seconds to get my attention. Either the art or the words have to be something exciting. From there, it has maybe three pages to hook me. I might extend that if there has been a recommendation from someone. After that, either the author has me or has lost me.

I love reading strange webcomics. ^w^ I used to read Perry Bible, but then the guy stopped updating. T^T Silent Kimbly Cute and colorful, by one of the guys that worked on Monsters Inc. As If!(Completed) About growing up in the 80s. Kawaii NotSo cute you'll want to puke up little chocolate hearts. Toy Division (18+) So cute, but so kinky! >w< Wikis Lessons in LifeI love the little messages that show up when you mouse over the comic strip. Garfield Minus GarfieldSo much better than the original.

I'm going to do the filthy dirty thing and plug my cousin's webcomic. My cousin, Travis Hanson, has started a webcomic. It was always his dream to do his own comic ((And I saw some of the images in this comic LITERALLY ten years ago.)) and his art style is wonderful. He's a freelance pro, does the art thing for a living, typically has a booth at SDCC. Tales of the Broken MoonI hope everyone enjoys.

Bean reminds me a lot of King Arthur as a boy. Your Cousin has a lot of talent, I love his art style.
And definitely not a filthy thing to post links to friends and family member's web comic art in a thread devoted to web comics smile We're a geek and artist guild- this is totally on topic.

Well, I'd like to update on Bean because it's come a long way online. He posted the 100th strip as of today. This comic has become the one I look forward to, and I just found out that he's just starting to get through book 5 in his real world art. Basically, if you haven't tried this, this is a hearty recommend from what can be called a fan.
