Alright I'm considering getting into long boards, more suited to my purposes (transportation) then a new school or my old school (though I can catch some decent speed and what not on the old school)

any recommendations for a beginning in this area of boarding? any companies to seek out ( preferably not to expensive) or to avoid?

any tips on technique or anything of that nature?

I myself am also all about poverty, so I have two recommendations

In both of these go to your local sporting goods store and buy a cheap long board, brand doesnt matter all that matters is that it is long.

Then go home and switch the trucks off the old school board

or take the wheels off the long board and put some crisco on the bearing...

vwalah!! you now have fast transportaion

heh buy some shite ABEC 1's and crisco them?... sounds like a good idea actually wink though for a long I will likely have to get a full set-up, I don't want to dismantle my precious oldschool... tis a piece of my childhood and all.

I like the larger longboards, the smaller ones are more wobbley and more like a normal deck. A nice wide, long vibrator shaped (hee) longboard is nice, it's steady, fast and other lovely things. I wouldn't put normal sized trucks on one though >.> The trucks on such a longboard are big.. And heavy, wider too. For a good reason <.<
Mine cost me almost 300$ in Canada D: Which is way too much, but it was bday money ^_^ I wouldn't buy a cheaper/shittier one because a nice longboard will last longer and perform better *nods* I've had mine for 5 years and it is still perfect.
I haven't even changed the berrings, and use it vigorously O.o Still runs smoothly.
Though.. I'd like to replace them -.- Money .. blah. Soft, soft soft wheels. If its for transportation, and getting a thick riser is a good idea, as the tires are big and will bite at your deck. Unless you get one of those annoying looking little guys with the wheel holes in the deck. Oh.. Nm I am babbling.. Sorry.. Rum. Anyways. I don't know that much about longboards bramd-wise and such, but I have had mine for 5 years now exactly.. It's SOO Worth it if you like your oldskool and skate for transportation. Just watch out down hill.. I screwed my knee up last year from a downhill wipe out and it still hurts just to touch it. Uhm. I don't know about brands, I use a Surf One deck, made by powell. It has lasted well, even after playing daily in parks... I dunno! lol.
*peers around* Longboarding is addictive, its fast, smooth, and can make you feel joyous inside razz Watch out..

My longboard is the most loved material item that I own ^_^
I highly recomend getting one. And a nice one, that will last long, despite cost.
It's worth it. But mabye that's just me :3

I recommend going with a Sector 9 board. They ride the smoothest from the array of boards I've rode. They come in a grip of different shapes, so it all depends on your style. I personally like the Surf inspired shape boards. I figure, if you're gonna go old school.... might as well do it the right way, right?

I personally like medium to softer wheels, but it really does depend on the terrain you'll be riding on. If you're gonna be rolling over gravel like stuff, then definitely go with harder wheels. Longboard wheels are typically larger, so you should be ok there.
Oh and go with Abec 5's. I personally have Abec 7's on mine cuz my board's all about speed. I would never recommend Abec 1's on a long board. minimum Abec 5's, but thats just my personal opinion.

But definitely, Sector 9 boards are the way to go man... The more moeny you put into taking care of your board, the better your board will take care of you. And that goes for any sport.

But yeah, they can be real fun. I persoanlly like busting the Hesshan surf-inspired tricks on the longboards. Find yourself a nice smooth hill, and you're set.
