[SYNOPSIS]

You are Alex Mercer, a shape-shifter with absolute mastery over your genetic structure, stalking the streets of New York City, searching for your past. Delve into a web of lies and rip the truth from those who've hidden it from the public for forty years. Learn that you are not alone in your amazing abilities; that other killers stalk the city.

A secret war is brewing in New York. First, battle below the media radar, then, watch as a deadly infection spirals out of control and the government seizes the media to stop the spread of information. Finally, experience New York under quarantine as martial law is instated; igniting a firestorm of combat, carnage and death.

Face an ever-growing army of infected — creatures warped and changed by the virus. As it spreads, more and more of New York falls under its control. The virus overwrites a creature's existing genetics; warping and changing their form into something else, something planned. As the virus gathers its army, rush to discover the secret behind it all; the one thing that can stop it all before the city falls into ruin.

Against you is Project Blackwatch – an elite force of Army specialists ready to stop the spread of the virus at any cost. These operatives have seen it all before, and are eager to track you down and bring you in, dead or alive. Their mandate is complete containment; even if it means everyone in New York must die.

Struggle to define what you will be. Do you assist Blackwatch in its hunt, or join forces with the virus and subjugate humanity? Push your powers to the limit, and unlock the genetic shackles that hold you in check.

Discover what lies beyond the edge of evolution.

[ALEX MERCER]

Alex Mercer is a man without memory, driven only by revenge. Using his shape shifting abilities — either by consuming targets for their form, skills and memories to assume a perfect disguise, or by transforming his body into a vast array of deadly biological weaponry — he hunts his way to the heart of the conspiracy which created him; making those responsible pay.

[DANA MERCER]

Dana Mercer — Alex's sister — began investigating GENTEK, the company Alex worked for, weeks before he vanished. Now the two struggle to learn why Alex has lost all recollection of his work there, before a deadly viral epidemic wipes out the entire population of Manhattan.

[MILITARY ZONES]

Areas of Manhattan reinforced by the Marines to prevent further spread of the virus; these zones are vital to stabilize and restore order to the city. At the center of these zones are military bases, reinforced buildings filled with armor, men and equipment to fight the outbreak.

[INFECTED ZONES]

Areas of Manhattan overrun by infection, filled with people transformed by the virus into killing machines. At the center of these zones are Infected Hives, biological factories producing hundreds of infected, hunters and other monstrous creations unleashed by the virus.

[CLAWS]

Concept: Alex's hands become deadly bone-sharp claws, transforming him a deadly killing machine.

Strengths: Cut your way through even the most resilient living creatures, butchering dozens in a gory spray of blood, organs and gristle.

Weaknesses: In its un-upgraded form, Claws are limited in effect against armored targets and enemies at a distance.

Upgrades: The Claws power can be upgraded with the Ground spike, a deadly distance attack. By transferring your mass underground, like a giant tunneling snake, you erupt a spray of huge spikes at a distance, impaling enemies and shattering vehicles.

[GROUND SPIKES]

Concept: Alex can smash the ground and send a portion of his biomass flowing under the surface to erupt from the ground as deadly spikes.

Strengths: The Ground Spikes are a strong weapon against ground targets including, vehicles, large groups of enemies, higher-powered enemies, etc.

Weaknesses: The Ground Spikes are useless against airborne targets.

Upgrades: The Ground Spikes can be upgraded to the Ground Spike Devastator move – a 360 degree wall of spikes which annihilates all surrounding enemies.

[STEALTH CONSUMES]

Concept: Alex kills and consumes a target in seconds, transforming into a perfect duplicate and replacing them before their death is even noticed.

Strengths: Allows Alex to kill and consume in the open without fear of detection by military forces.

Weaknesses: Requires Alex to slowly approach the target while out of Alert.

[PARKOUR]

Alex Mercer is the ultimate predator; no obstacle can stop him — he can run up walls, leap one hundred feet in the air, effortlessly traverse a crowded city street at sixty miles and hour and more. His parkour-like movement allows him to smoothly leap, jump, flip and tumble over any obstacle with ease, and what he can't move over he moves through.

Warning - This post contains Spoilers.

[PLOT]

The plot of Prototype centers on a large conspiracy regarding an unnamed mutagenic virus currently infecting New York City. The effects of the virus have been witnessed before in the town of Hope, Idaho in 1971. After being released in Penn Station in New York, the virus spreads through the city, necessitating at first subtle government actions to combat it, then martial law and evacuation. Alex wakes up with heavy amnesia in a morgue under the scalpels of two HAZMAT-suited scientists and escapes dazed into the city. He then begins to come to terms with his powers (including the ability to absorb memories - which is crucial to piecing together his own), and makes contact with his sister, Dana Mercer. Dana assists him in finding members of the conspiracy, which include government officials, military personnel and employees of bio-engineering firm GENTEK, where it is revealed Alex was previously employed.

Alex encounters several characters, not all of which have currently been revealed. His primary physical antagonist is the Specialist, leader of the Blackwatch special forces branch of the US military. Other characters include Karen Parker, a researcher at GENTEK and Alex's former girlfriend, Pat McMullen, head of GENTEK, and Dr Ragland, a pathologist that assists Alex and studies the infected.

As Alex adds more and more nodes to the Web of Intrigue (by consuming people's minds), the virus begins to spread further and further through New York, and the military is forced to step up operations in order to prevent spreading further. The city is evacuated, quarantined and placed under martial law as the military moves in with a full-scale lockdown with tanks, infantry and air support. The virus grows stronger and stronger, mutating citizens of New York into various monstrous forms. As the conflict begins to consume the city Alex's actions will play a part in deciding the course of the battle and perhaps the ultimate victor. As the game features non-linear sandbox play, the player is free to explore the city with Alex's superhuman agility through the course of the game. Steve Mele, Art Production Manager of Radical Entertainment, said in a blog "Speaking of exploring, I know there is a severed human leg on a rooftop somewhere in the city which initiates a side-story when found."

[US MILITARY]

US Marine Forces are deployed upon a quarantined Manhattan Island. Martial law is declared, and the city itself is occupied when the virus takes on epidemic proportions. As the most powerful army in the world, the US military possesses main battle tanks, armoured personnel carriers and attack helicopters such as the AH64 Apache, in addition to infantry armed with M4A1, M16A2 and M16A4 assault rifles, grenade launchers and Javelin missile launchers. The Marines set up fortified areas within New York, deploying turrets, guards and heavy barricades on the streets. The player will often have to infiltrate (either subtly or overtly) these fortresses in order to gain access to military targets in the Web of Intrigue.

The Military deployment also unofficially includes the "Blackwatch" Special Forces. A secret sub-branch of the US Military's special forces, Blackwatch is a ruthless and deadly force of highly-trained soldiers that have previous experience in dealing with the effects of the virus (possibly in Hope, Idaho). In the field they are lead by the Specialist, an utterly merciless soldier armed with a grenade launcher and a high-voltage stun baton. Blackwatch will "stop at nothing to halt the infection," even going so far as to kill humans who are not visibly infected, though they may be afflicted. Blackwatch is also apparently using genetic experiments to fight the infected, fielding massive, incredibly strong "supersoldiers" that seem to be able to go toe-to-toe with Hunters or even Alex.

[THE INFECTED]

The virus spreading through New York mutates its hosts into a variety of hideous, powerful creatures, which share a reddish-black color scheme similar to Alex's powers. There seem to be multiple variants of the virus; what affects the different strains have is unknown. Low-level infections cause zombie-like symptoms, causing horrible skeletal, muscular and skin deformities in victims, regressing them mentally to savage beasts. These infected become widespread across the city and extremely numerous but are easily killed by both Alex and the military. Larger, more powerful forms of the virus include the Hunter creatures, which are massive (more than twelve feet tall and appearing to weigh around a ton), extremely strong and very durable (capable of withstanding a tank shell and several strikes from Alex's blade attack before dying). Early video previews of the game showed Hunters with spikes, long claws, elongated heads and tails this variety called the "Hunter Brawler", but more recent videos depict them as huge mutated humanoids with reddish, hairless skin, bulging muscles and apparently empty eye sockets. A larger, more powerful and physically twisted Hunter called the "Leader Hunter" abducts Dana during the course of the game, necessitating a superpowered chase through the city by Alex with the military tailing.

The larger infected monster seen in video previews are Hydras, huge subterranean creatures that resemble a giant muscular tentacles erupting from beneath the ground. The Hydras use teeth-like appendages to throw cars and other objects at enemies and retreat underground when damaged.

The largest mutated monstrosity is the mother which is seen only in a short period of time on the Brutal Boss trailer. Rumors say that Mother is the source of the infection; it contains at least fourteen different strains of the virus.
