When saris are produced in India, the mill ends of the silk are cut off. This used to lead to tons of waste, but has now spawned a cottage industry. The cut off fabric is spun into yarn and sold around the world. You can find it on eBay and several other online stores.

My friend has a scarf her mom bought for her that is made from recycled silk, like sari yarn. It's soo pretty, I want to work with recycled silk yarn now.

Edit: I finally bought myself some recycled silk yarn, and it is interesting to work with. my only complaint is that it likes to curl up on itself, but that's not a big deal. I made one shawl with it already, and am working on a second one. biggrin

This sounds like interesting material. I'll have to see if my friend can pick me up some when she goes this summer to India, if she can find it.
Is it as colorful as the sari are over there? They always seem to have such vivid colors. I know sometimes when stuff is recycled it doesn't turn out as vivid as the original material, like recycled paper.
