Any gold or items donated to the guild mule can be used by you the member on your quest for items. Of course, collateral is needed to ensure payments but that'll be between you and the Mule to decide.
The inventory of the Guild Mule will be displayed at all times so if you see something you like or want to request a loan for an item, just contact the mule via PM and you two can strike up a deal.
