Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist artist. He lived from March 30 1853 to July 29 1890.
He produced more than 2,000 works, including around 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings and sketches. That's about 3000 altogether over the course of 37 years.
Van Gogh had an immense influence on 20th century art.
He had an older brother who was stillborn and it is believed that he had some impact on Van gogh's artworks.
Van Gogh was afflicted by a mental illness and it's well known that he cut his left ear off in a what was probably a seizure. It's hard to label his mental illness, and over 30 diagnoses have been suggested.
