Lenore sat on the woven rug near the common room fireplace, staring into the dying embers with her dark eyes not once wavering from the center. She felt so hot, but knew that if she moved away now, it would only be replaced by that horrible empty coldness that went all the way inside of you. She closed her eyes and buried them in her knees. She had nearly died today. Otto had nearly lost his mind. Erika had nearly died too. Oh, god. She had heard, of course, all of the stories about the second Voldemort War, but that was only a taste. One could not learn the taste of near-death or the stench of torture and blood from a textbook. She let out a sigh and closed her eyes, wondering how long it would take for the fire to burn her up into ash.

Scarlett Eaves Scarlett dragged her feet into the common room after helping all the students return to Hogwarts safely from battle-ravaged Hogsmeade. She felt strangely apathetic to the whole event, despite seeing so many people get hurt. She vaguely told herself that she was probably in shock and the horror of it would manifest itself in her dreams and come to a head in the middle of the night when she would wake up screaming in terror and wake up her whole dormitory. She collapsed into a squashy armchair in front of the fireplace, right behind, she noticed a few seconds later than would've been normal, Otto's and Erika's friend, Lenore. Scarlett remembered the state the girl had been in at the Three Broomsticks and then recalled watching her be tortured by one of the Death Eaters. Scarlett felt a sudden rush of rage rock her body and longed to go back and kill as many Death Eaters as her wand could find. The rage quickly changed into sorrow and empathy and she wanted very badly to go over to the girl and comfort her, and even let her cry on her shoulder, but Scarlett knew full well how one feels after something traumatic like that, and usually you desire to be alone for a very long time. Instead, Scarlett frowned sadly at Lenore and then turned to stare into the fire, flames undulating with a seemingly evil demeanor.

Erika wiped her eyes and glanced around the common room from where she sat against the wall to the left of the fireplace, curled up next to Otto. She had been weeping soundlessly into her brother's robes, but now the tears had finally come to a halt and she had suddenly become aware of the eerie silence hanging in the air. The Gryffindor common room was, as a rule, never quiet, but now everyone seemed to be both dead tired and in a state of shock. Despite the fire, the air was frigid with the thoughts floating around; thoughts about the dead and the dying. Erika could practically hear her fellow Gryffindors asking themselves the endless, unanswerable questions about the war, about the attack, about what would happen next. Worrying. Fretting. Doubting.
Erika closed her eyes again and laid her head back down on Otto's shoulder, wrapping her arms around him and trying to stop reliving those seconds... those two seconds where she had been dead meat...
Maybe I'll wake up and this will all have been a dream... she thought, drifting off into a light slumber.
Otto held Erika close, rubbing her shoulder and leaning his head down on top of hers. Since finding her at Honeydukes he hadn't let her leave his sight, as if doing so even for a moment would cause her to vanish.
He tried to convince himself of how truly lucky he was. He'd thought that Erika had been lost for good, but Lenore had helped him find her. Then he'd thought that Lenore had been killed, but she'd only been faking. After the slaughter of the day, he was really rather fortunate to be watching the flames dance in Lenore's eyes as he held his trembling sister...
But he couldn't push any of it away. He couldn't stop the ghosts of what he'd felt from accosting him - his chest constricting with panic as he ran through the massacre in search of Erika, his stomach dropping sickeningly as Lenore was "struck" by that flash of green...
He closed his eyes and held Erika tighter, trying vainly to think of something else, anything else... but even his massive pile of homework wasn't dire enough to distract from this.

Just about all of the blood in Lenore's body had drained into her legs, and the tip of her nose. She finally managed to sit up or do something productive, but found that when she moved, echoes of pain still dwelled in her hollow body. She peered over her shoulder at Otto and Erika and wished in vain that her brother was more like Otto. Otto cared and fretted and worried about his sister to the point that Erika got annoyed. Lenore's brother make her sell drugs to primary school kids and, when that money wasn't enough, his little sister's body. She turned her head away from the siblings now, so they wouldn't see the envious tears building in her eyes, and wrapped her arms more firmly around herself.

Otto noticed that Erika had fallen asleep on him, so he nudged her back awake gently and told her that she ought to get in bed. Erika yawned and nodded, and Otto gave her a quick kiss on the forehead before she sleepily trudged to the girls' dorm.
With his sister taken care of, Otto moved to sit next to Lenore, who looked overwhelmingly lonely with her arms wrapped around her as though she was freezing, sitting directly in front of the fire. "Hey," he said, furrowing his brow at the unnatural shine of her eyes.

Lenore winced slightly at Otto's apprehensive voice. She tilted her head ever-so-slightly so that her hair fell down and hid her face. "Hey," she responded back almost immediately, feeling her knuckles beginning to hurt from the grip on her arms. Her voice sounded fake and tinny, and far too cheerful for having just survived death twice in one day.

Scarlett Eaves Scarlett shifted her position on the couch and laid her body across it, resting her head on a pillow that was propped up on the armrest. She felt her eyes drooping as the drowsiness came quicker than before. She swept her sleepy eyes to the fireplace where Otto had gone to talk to Lenore. She felt a sudden pang of jealousy as she watched the two conversing, having no friends of her own to converse with. She had felt alone many times before, especially after her brother's death, but suddenly it overwhelmed her very being, filled every pore and nook inside her with an agonizing loneliness. The events of the day had greatly contributed to this overwhelming emotion, which made her really see for the first time since arriving at Hogwarts just how desolate her life was. I could've died today and no one would've cared, she thought miserably. I have no one to help me understand and cope with everything, no one to reassure me that things will be ok even if they really won't be. What a textbook case of loneliness. I should've died today. At least then I could probably have been with Matt again. I miss you, Matt. I need my brother now more than ever. She closed her eyes as a solitary tear slid sideways down her cheek.

Otto opened his mouth to say something, then closed it again. He opened his mouth a second time, then snapped it shut once more, marveling at how incredibly awful he was at thinking of something to say to her. It'd been difficult enough before when the only barrier had been his general awkwardness, but now they had their shared near-death experience adding to the muck. He spent another minute or so digging through his thoughts before he finally sighed heavily and hesitantly, shyly, slung his arm over her shoulder like he'd done earlier to his sister.
He glanced behind him briefly and saw Scarlett, looking outright dejected. Frowning, he reached back with the hand that wasn't rested on Lenore's arm and squeezed her hand comfortingly, vaguely wondering when he'd become so touchy-feely. Maybe getting caught in the midst of a battle has its perks. Maybe it turns you into some kind of macho ladies' man. This thought made him smirk.

Scarlett Eaves Scarlett's eyes snapped to meet Otto's as he squeezed her hand. A dark flush rose up her pale cheeks and ears and her heart began pounding faster. She was confused by the alien feelings that seemed to fill her heart. Maybe the shock is affecting my body physically and I might have a heart attack tonight as I remember the falling bodies, she thought, as she found that to be the only reason why her heart could be beating so quickly and why her stomach was doing backflips. As she thought this, she noticed how the firelight made his dark brown hair have a gold-colored sheen to it and made his brown eyes look livelier than normal. Oh....kay.....no more high-action experiences for me..., she thought, completely concerned for her mental well-being after making such odd and unusual observations. She managed to give Otto a grateful smile despite her inner turmoil because with that small gesture, he had given Scarlett hope that she might not be all alone after all.

The moment Otto's arm slid around her shoulders, Lenore found herself once again fighting that age-old fight with herself that took her whole body to win. A surge of warmth spread from deep down in her gut and instantly lodged itself in her throat and behind her eyes. Her whole upper body stiffened, fighting the insane urge to start sobbing, and when she tried to take a slow deep breath it came as a rattling gasp of near-pain. Stop crying, stop crying, stop crying, stop crying.... Suddenly, she was not sixteen, but six, and it was not her voice telling her to be quiet, but Daniel. Shut up! Stop crying! I swear to god, I'm going to kill you if you don't shut up right now! Back in the present, it actually worked, but she started shivering slightly, still keeping her body from leaning against Otto in the way she so desperately wanted to.

Otto could feel Lenore stiffening and wondered if he'd done something wrong. He rubbed her shoulder as if he was trying to warm her up. "Hey, you're freezing up on me," he said in an attempt at lightening the mood a bit. Then, in a whisper, "It's alright." He wasn't altogether certain exactly what was alright at the moment, but it had just seemed like what he ought to say. It seemed like what he'd want to hear.

Lenore closed her eyes tightly as Daniel's screams in her head suddenly melded into the screams of the people in Hogsmeade, and Otto screaming for his sister, and even her own screams as she clawed at her own skin in an insane effort to make the fire leave her veins. Her left forearm was scabbed and raw. "I'm sorr-," her voice caught so suddenly that she nearly choked on her own saliva, and stopped to gulp air in more slowly. "I'm sorry," she repeated, bringing her hands away from her arms only long enough to close them over her ears, trying to drown out the screaming in her head. She had no idea who she was apologizing to, or for what, but she did know that there was a strange, high, keening sort of sound coming from deep in her throat. Tears were beginning to build up, ten times stronger now than before.

Otto could see that Lenore was trying to resist the emotions building up inside of her, and he also knew that if she didn't let it out she'd go berserk. He knew because Erika used to get that way a lot when the things upsetting her kept piling up - she still got that way sometimes, in fact. He could understand her not wanting to cry in front of him to a point, but, well, he didn't want to watch her continue to fight herself.
Otto handled this like he handled it with Erika - he wrapped his other arm around Lenore, so he was cuddling her. Sure hope she doesn't have a boyfriend to beat me up for this... he thought idly. Then he tenderly pulled Lenore's head down onto his shoulder and rested his chin atop her head. "There's no reason to apologize," he said, grinning a little. "It's fine, everything's fine... Just relax, it's over. Done. Færdig." He shook his head at himself - he always slipped into Danish whenever he was comforting his sister, because his father had always slipped into Danish when he was comforting Otto. But he didn't think Lenore spoke any Danish. "I mean finished. Just... y'know... yeah..."
Oh, well done, Otto, way to ruin it. He shoved aside his clumsy words, though, and stroked Lenore's hair, alternately saying random soothing words (and making a conscious effort to stick to English) and humming Erika's favorite lullaby.
