Bleach Shinigami
Soul Reapers are departed human souls that have gained supernatural powers. Soul Reapers can only be seen by other spiritually aware entities, which excludes most humans. Additionally, they can be injured and die like regular humans, though it takes considerably greater injuries for the latter to occur than it would in regular humans.

All Soul Reapers possess a zanpakutō (斬魄刀?, literally "soul-cutting sword"), a weapon which reflects aspects of their soul and personality. By learning the name of the sword's spirit and through training, Soul Reapers can unlock more powerful forms of their zanpakutō. The first form, known as shikai (始解?, "initial release"), changes the sword's appearance to better facilitate its special abilities. The second form, known as bankai (卍解?, "final release"), can only normally be achieved when a Soul Reaper trains with their zanpakutō for decades. Once achieved, the Soul Reaper can unlock their zanpakutō's full potential, increasing their own power several times over.[5]

Many Soul Reapers are able to use kidō (鬼道?, literally "way of the demon"), a form of magic that can be performed by reciting a specific incantation. Most of the kidō spells seen in the series have been used as attacks, defensive measures, or to bind others, though they can also serve more specialized needs such as healing wounds or communication over long distances. Spells are ranked on a scale of 1 to 99, indicating their complexity and overall power.

Soul Reaper operations are based out of Soul Society, which is an afterlife in Bleach. Travel between the human world and Soul Society is extremely limited and monitored, but some Soul Reapers are stationed in the human world to carry out their duties. In addition, it is a crime for a Soul Reaper to remain in the human world longer than directed. A Soul Reaper's duties include leading wholes (ghosts) to Soul Society in a practice called soul burial (魂葬(こんそう), konsou?), and the cleansing of hollows (evil spirits).[6]

Shinigami are the deceased souls of humans that have gained supernatural abilities. They are made of ectoplasm (霊子, reishi) and can only be seen by other spiritual beings. They do seem to have an ability to interact with their environment even if the majority of living cannot see them. They are also able to die if injured severely enough, though they need to be substantially more wounded than a human would to die. Shinigami are even able to produce children the same way the living would.

Uniform (死覇装 shihakushō , lit. garment of dead souls)

The traditional uniform of a shinigami consists of a white kosode (short sleeved), a black, short kimono, black hakama and a white obi sash. Though kosode are normally longer they can he rolled or folded up so not to catch awkwardly in the hakama. The hakama are divided and look like a wide pair of pants with pleating, a koshiita (a stiff or padded part in the lower back of the wearer), and himo (long lengths of fabric tied around the waist over the obi). Captains additionally wear a haori, a type of long white coat that displays the squad number on the back, that may or may not have sleeves. Lieutenants also have badges that normally are marked to show their division symbol and seat number. Most often it is worn on the left arm and is required to be worn during meetings. Many captains and vice-captains are seen to personalize their appearance.

Gotei 13 (護廷十三隊,Goteijūsantai, "13 Division Imperial Guards", or "13 Court Guard Squads")

Shinigami are primarily divided up among the Goteijūsantai, or Gotei 13 for short. The Gotei 13 are the primary means of defense for Soul Society and each squad normally has a specialized function. There are other groups outside the Gotei 13 that protect and serve which include three other recognized groups. The Kidō Corps (鬼道衆, kidōshū) is a reclusive group that specializes in kidō and is left in charge of the gateway connecting Soul Society to the human world. Onmitsukidō (隠密機動,The Stealth Forces, literally "hidden secret movements organization"), typically led by the captain of the 2nd Division, are tasked with surveillance, covert operations, and imprisoning potentially problematic Soul Reapers. The Zero Division, a secret group composed only of former captains, protects the royal family.

Zanpakutou (斬魄刀, zanpakutō lit. soul-cutting sword)

Zanapkutou are a manifestation of a Shinigami's power and are essentially a piece of the individual's soul. This makes each and ever zanpakutou unique to it's user and exact duplication is impossible. It is possible to "upgrade" the blade after a shinigami has been able to speak to the spirit contained within the zanapkutou. Before they are able to communicate with the spirit ,however, a zanpakutou will take the form of a plain, simple katana that is considered name less and called as asauchi, meaning "shallow cut." Zanpakutou cannot be replaced and when damaged they will repair slowly over time. Calling out the shikai state of the blade will restore it instantly however.

Wielding a zanpakutou is an easy matter for the true owner of the blade but it is possible for someone else to use another's zanpakutou. It is significantly more difficult since anyone trying to use a weapon not there own like zanpakutou needs to make the spirit within it bow to command by force.

Shikai (始解, shikai, initial release)

The first "upgrade" that a zanpakutou goes through. To achieve shikai a shinigami must learn the name of the spirit within the weapon. A name cannot be chosen as the spirit already has a name of it's own and will not respond to any other. Shikai also marks a small amount of control put over the spirit by the wielder and often the zanpakutou will undergo a transformation that allows it to alter to greater show some of the spirit. It also seems that the spirits have personalities, often that are similar in nature to the whom they belong to.

To release a shikai often a command must be issued followed by the zanpakutou's name. Most often it is a single verb but may be a short poem instead. Most often the command will relate to its abilities in some manner. In some cases once released the zanpakutou will remain in it's shikai state instead of returning to its sealed asauchi state.

The form of a zanpakutou's shikai also will likely reflect the abilities it can use. Again a command is most often issued along with the name of an attack to unleash any of these special abilities. Also knowing the name of an attack drastically increases it's power.

Bankai (卍解, final release)

The ultimate and final form of a zanpakutou. Often the name of the spirit will lengthen or in some cases be altered completely in this state. Generally bankai are known to take large forms and is a manifestation of the inner spirit of the zanpakutou itself. Unlike shikai, bankai does not have a trigger command though often the shinigami must state "bankai" to release this final form.

Achieving bankai takes centuries of experience and additionally it is said another ten years to master it. The reason for the difficulty is because a shinigami must force the spirit of the zanpakutou to form in the real world, a technique called subjugation. In the series Byakuya Kuchiki claims that even among the four noble houses in Soul Society only one in several generations will be able to achieve bankai. It is a rarity because it takes such a great amount of time and experience and seems to be almost exclusive to the captains of the Gotei 13. A few non captains have gained this skill but they are very few.

Kisuke Urahara did create Tenshintai (転神体, lit. change [death] god body) a device that forces a zanpakutou's spirit to manifest itself. The spirit will manifest for one day after the doll like device is punctured by the blade. However, this method is very dangerous and the process may only be repeated for three days, after which even Urahara stated it would be potentially deadly if continued. Thus using the Tenshintai was determined to have a minimum and maximum use of three days.

Kidou (鬼道, Kidō lit. demon path)

The type of sorcery that shinigami use. The main uses of which appear to be for healing, attacking and restraint. Healing seems to be a general skill and is not commonly practice by all shinigami.

The other two types, attacking and restricting are most common among shinigami. There are also requirements that must be met to cast any kidou, that boil down to four basic steps.
1. An incantation must be recited.
2. The spell must be identified as destructive of binding.
3. It's number must he stated, indicating it's difficulty. (The higher the number the greater the difficulty to cast it effectively.)
4. Then the name must be called.
After training the first step can be eliminated, which is handy since most of the incantations are long and impractical to call out in the middle of battle. Kidou can also be combined by alternating back and forth between lines of the incantation of each spell.

Destructive Spells: Hadou(破道, lit. "way of destruction")

Hadou 1, Thrust (衝 shō)
— Pushes the target away from the caster.

Hadou 4, White Lightning (白雷 byakurai)
— Fires a concentrated bolt of lightning from the caster's forefinger.

Hadou 31, Shot of Red Fire! (赤火砲 shakkahō)
— Fires a ball of red energy at a target
"Ruler, mask of flesh and blood, all things in the universe fly! That which names all things in nature, gathering at heat and war, beyond the seas in reverse, take steps to the south!"

Hadou 33, Blue Fire, Crash Down! (蒼火墜 sōkatsui, Pale Fire Crash in the English dub)
— Fires a burst of blue spiritual energy at a target in a similar manner to 31, but over a wider area and with more power.
"Ye Lord! Mask of flesh and bone, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! Truth and temperance, Upon this sinless wall of dreams unleash but slightly the wrath of your claws!"

Hadou 54, Abolishing Flames (廃炎 haien)
— Fires a blast of purple spiritual energy that will incinerate a target completely when it makes contact.

Hadou 58, Whirling Tempest (闐嵐, tenran)
— A widening tornado-like blast is fired towards the target.

Hadou 63, Thunder Roar Cannon (雷吼炮 raikōhō)
— Fires a massive wave of yellow energy at a target.

Hadou 63, Twin Lotus Blue Fire, Crash Down (双蓮蒼火墜 sōren sōkatsui)
— Essentially a doubled version of #33, this spell fires two shots of blue fire with greater potency than the single-shot variety. In the anime, Rukia labels this spell as #73.
"Mask of blood and flesh, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! On the wall of blue flame, inscribe a twin lotus. In the abyss of conflagration, wait at the far heavens."

Hadou 88, Flying Dragon Burglar-Striking Sky-Quaking Lightning Cannon (飛竜撃賊震天雷砲, hiryūgekizokushintenraihō)
— Fires a massive white blast of spiritual energy in a fashion similar to a laser

Hadou 90, Black Coffin (黒棺 kurohitsugi)
— Forms a box of black energy around a target, which is then pierced by dozens of energy "spears", lacerating the one inside from head to toe. Aizen notes that the spell only reached a third of its destructive potential the one time he uses it, indicating that the spell would be far more damaging at full power. Its appearance and function is reminiscent of a common magician's trick, as well as certain torture devices used during the Spanish Inquisition.

Binding/Restricting Spells:Bakudou (縛道, lit. "way of binding")

Bakudou 1, Restrain (塞 sai)
— Locks a target's arms in place behind their back.

Bakudou 4, Crawling Rope (這縄 hainawa)
— An energy rope entangles a target's arms.

Bakudou 9, Strike (撃 geki)
— Engulfs a target in red light, completely paralyzing them.
“Disintigrate, you black dog of Rondanin! Look upon yourself with horror and then claw out your own throat.”

Bakudou 30, Beak-Stab Triple-Flash (嘴突三閃, shitotsusansen)
— After using kido energy to draw out an equilateral triangle, the targets' arms and waist are pinned down and rendered immobile.

Bakudou 39, Arc Shield (円閘扇, enkosen)
— Summons a shield of energy to block the opponents' attacks.

Bakudou 58, Summoning of the Tracking Sparrows (摑趾追雀 kakushitsuijaku)
— Tracks and locates any spiritual force the user focuses on. To activate it, the user must draw a circle on the ground, cut into four parts with a specific character in each. The incantation animates the circle, causing various numbers to appear within until the specific set is found. The number set seems to be a variation on longitude and latitude.

Bakudou 61, Six Rods Prison of Light (六杖光牢 rikujōkōrō)
— Summons six thin, but wide, beams of light that slam into a target's midsection, holding them in place. Referred to as "Six Rod Light Restraint" in the English manga and "Six Bars of Light" in some of the games.
"The thunderous chariot, with light I will separate them into six paths. I shall wait for the glorious fire at the zenith peak."

Bakudou 62, Hundred Stepped Rails (百歩欄干, hyapporankan)
— A rod formed of energy is thrown towards the target before it disintegrates into numerous short rods which are used to pin the target to the surroundings and render them immobile.

Bakudou 63, Chainlike Desert (sajo sabaku)
— The target is wrapped from the neck down in a thick chain.

Bakudou 75, Quintet of 1 kan Iron Pillars (五柱鉄貫 gochūtekkan)
— Summons five incredibly tall and thick pillars to pin a target to the ground.
"Walls of iron sand, a priestly pagoda, glowing iron-clad fireflies. Standing upright silent to the end."

Bakudou 77, Heavenly Rickshaws in Silken Air (天挺空羅 tenteikūra)
— Transmits messages to anyone within Soul Society. In addition to reciting the spell, the user must draw specific markings on their arms, which are animated by the spell to convey the messages.
“ Black and white net. Twenty-two bridges, sixty-six crowns and belts. Footprints, distant thunder, sharp peak, engulfing land, hidden in the night, sea of clouds, blue line. Form a circle and fly through the heavens.”

Bakudou 81, Splitting Void (斷空 danku)
— Creates an energy barrier in the form of a rectangular wall. According to Byakuya, it is capable of stopping destructive spells up to #89.

Bakudou 99, Part 1. Seal (禁 kin, Restrict in the English dub)
— Binds the arms of a target with spiritual fabric and iron shafts.

Bakudo 99, Part 2. Great seal (卍禁 bankin)
— This spell covers a target from head to toe with spiritual fabric [first song: halting fabric (初曲・止繃 shokyoku: shiryū)], stabs them with numerous metal blades [second song: hundred linked bolts (弐曲・百連閂 nikyoku: hyakurensan)], and then smashes them with an immense metal cube [final song: great seal of 10,000 forbiddings (終曲・卍禁太封 shūkyoku: bankin taihō)].

Uncategorized Kidou

White Crawl (白伏 hakufuku)
—Momo Hinamori uses this spell while imprisoned to knock out a guard and destroy everything within a certain radius of herself. The anime suggests that it is a binding spell, but doesn't number it.

Mirror Door (鏡門 kyōmon)
— Toushiro Hitsugaya used this to seal Momo Hinamori's hospital room. It creates a glass-like barrier which is difficult to break from the outside, but quite simple to break from the inside.

Stone Wave (石波, seppa)
— Ganju's signature technique turns whatever it is aimed at into sand. It has a variety of uses, ranging from cushioning a fall to creating quick escape routes.
Kido Cannon (鬼道砲 Kidōhō)
As the name suggests, the Kidō Cannon is basically a high-intensity energy weapon powered by kidō in Bleach: Memories of Nobody. It consists of a crystalline focus point attached to the top of a massive pole, with several smaller crystal structures circling up towards the main one. It is powered by hundreds of Soul Reapers working in concert, creating an energy blast capable of obliterating a small dimension. The blast forms into several animal shapes which roar just before contact. The power of the blast is such that, in addition to destroying its target, it also causes a small amount of damage to both the human world and Soul Society. Despite its power, it is not a reusable weapon, as it burns into a pile of scrap after being fired.

Flash Step (瞬歩 shunpo)
—A high speed movement ability that is not unique to any particular shinigami.

Utsusemi (空蝉, lit. cicada)
— A technique that allows the user to move out the way of harm by creating an image of themselves to brunt the attacked instead. Refers to the molting of cicadas. Was a creation of Yoruichi Shihouin

Flash Cry (瞬閧 shunkō)
— A technique that combines hand-to-hand combat and kido. It concentrates high-pressure kidō energy around the body, allowing it to be fired at opponents. It can also be used to instantly neutralize an opponent's movement.

Senka (闪花, lit. Flash Blossom)
— A flash step combined with a spin to quickly move behind the enemy, followed by a strike aimed to destroy the saketsu chain and the hakusui soul sleep with a combination of two quick thrusts. Created by Byakuya Kuchiki

Reverse Demon (反鬼 hanki)
— This technique nullifies an opponent's kidō by hitting them with a perfectly opposite surge of energy. Yoruichi uses this against Soifon's shunkō.

Reiraku ("spiritual threads")
— A technique that can be used by upper level Shinigami that allows them to see the soul ribbons, or soul threads, of the beings around them. A human or a Quincy soul should have a white ribbon. Shinigami however possess red soul ribbons.

Temporal Stasis (時間停止, jikanteishi)
— A forbidden spell used by Tessai

Spatial Displacement (空間転位, kūkanten'i)
— A forbidden spell used by Tessai with jikanteishi to teleport a specified portion of space from one point to another, transporting even other active kidō spells.

Learnable Hollow Techniques

Garganta (黒腔(ガルガンタ),Japanese for "black cavity," Spanish for "throat")
— How arrancar move to and from Hueco Mundo. It literally tears open the dimensional fabric separating the worlds, revealing a tunnel of whirling, torrential energy that must be focused and solidified to create a discernible pathway. Kaname Tōsen and Kisuke Urahara have also demonstrated the ability to use garganta; Mayuri Kurotsuchi explains that Soul Society cannot do this because they haven't researched the technique.
Shinigami Incantation: "The stone binding both worlds lies in my left hand, the sword securing reality in my right. Black haired Shepard, chair of hanged men. With the arrival of the stratus we strike the ibis."
