You want to know what makes me cringe? When I'm out walking with someone along a creek, river, lake, etc. And who ever is with me sees a snake in the water and shouts "hey look it's a water moccasin! That sure is one deadly snake!" when it's not a moccasin. Forget about seeing it in the water. I was walking along my canal and I overheard this father pointing out to his son a black racer and called it a water moccasin. It's like people think there are only 2 species of snakes in the world. It's either a water moccasin or a garter snake. I wish people would really spend the time to be able to identify native and non-native snakes. It can really save your life and stop you from looking stupid.

lol, this is why I EDUCATE people of all ages whenever I go out to an area with wildlife and people around. I've taught kids, adults, and even park rangers about animals and plants. I find it disgraceful for people to indiscriminately label animals with names out of their own ignorance. I have seen this with fish, birds, snakes, lizards, and many other things as well. It frustrates and annoys me because they fail to educate themselves or others of commonly known information.
