#1. Who is in charge? The first thing any player should understand is the Game Master is the Ruler of the game. They may make a mistake or have a slip of the tongue but they put in long hours building a game session that they don't get to play themselves. If they bend or change their rules they most likely have cause and if they will not share the reason you might want a new GM. Game Masters remember you are in charge of the game. Do not let the players beat you to death with the rule book. It's your world your rules. That being said it is the GM's job to run a fair and fun game. Don't get vindictive or petty. If you do you'll lose your players.
#2 The core of the game. There are 3 basic cores to most games. Adventuring, Survival, and Service. a.) Adventuring is like a nomadic mercenary goes where the wind blows and works only for who and when they feel like. This is the most used RP type.
b.) Survival is the escaped slave, War Zone or post Apocalypse survivor. You daily life is a struggle to survive. Zombie world anyone?
c.) Service is the basic Knight Errand on a quest. You are working for a higher power and that is the driving force in your life.
These 3 may be mixed together in more advance games but most games and characters can be broken down in to the 3.
#3 Setting This is not where but how/why the world is the way it is. Most RPGs are not set in an age of wonder but before or after. During the age of wonder people are happy there is no war and they are to busy doing wondrous things to bother with adventuring or survival. The pesky things like war and disasters just don't happen so there is not much use for Heroes and Villains. It is the time before the wonder age during the build up and after it's collapse that the Heroes and Villains are needed. Really only the Service types are needed in the age of wonder to keep the peace and to provide the Magis Wonderious the supplies used to create his/her Wonders! However the nature of the universe hates peace. Every age of wonder has rot at it's roots. Most sow the seeds of their own destruction at their beginning and that in itself can be a game.
#4 Cheaters lose their friends. It is okay to take from a fallen foe in the game but cheating in the game belittles all those who play honestly and Disrupts the game. I personally use the honor system but will hammer or expel any player I catch cheating. I put a lot of time into my games and if your going to cheat stay the heck out of my games.
I will add more 101 material latter on. Feel free to post your own material or ask questions.

tlc_angel Hey, thanks for the information. I hope others will read it as well. Thank you. The most basic form of Role Playing is the Talk Around. No dice is needed to do it. All it is, is one starts a game by saying some action then the next in line counters or helps. This gos on until someone says something so stupid or powerful it kills the mood or game. This type of game is easy to start and useful to writers but it is difficult to keep going for very long.

Tools Roll Playing Table Style
Good mind that can think on the fly. I do some preplanned but most of my games are off the cuff.
Paper. leaf and drawing paper is best to start. Be shore to have something to put it in so you don't misplace any notes.
Dice, cards or even coins can be used to generate random results. Gamers dice is best but some games do not use them all. A gamers set has a D4( 4 SIDED) D6, D8,D10, D12, and D20. some sets have a % dice (2 D10s one with 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0 and one with 10,20,30,40,50,60,70,80,90,00. A single D10 can be use to do % rolls by rolling twice. 4 on the first roll and 5 on the second =45%. Cards can also be used but you have to work out your own system but there are upto 140k non-repetitive combination in a 52 card deck. It can be confusing if you don't write down your system. A coin flip only allows yes/no or 50/50 chance unless you use the odd/even system with more coins or flips.
Source material. These do not have to be game books. Once I was just running dry on ideas and picked up a catalog. It has a pretty model so I started with a merchant's beautiful daughter being kid napped by a monster who could grab you with it's air elemental vortex (vacuum cleaner add) and bake you with it's eye beams (camera and microwave adds) it was created by the evil genus Dr Craftsman. He was hired by the merchant's rival Samuel Walcroft (Sam's club & Walmart Adds). A good game system book will save you time and has a set standardized rules system. Just remember what I first said, It your world and your rules just make it fun.

I can't draw free hand for crap. Visual adds can save a dieing game. Even a sick drawing or 2 minute map can help with confusion. I have to admit I use art sites to get source material. I do alter it but never repost any of it with out permission. I may be a pirate but I'm not thief. I use www.DeviantArt.com and a few adult art sites for the hot character factor.

Getting a name. Multi-Language dictionary, Old thrift store reference books are good sources for names. I like to flip to 3 random pages in a book close my eyes touch each page and take the first 3 letters of each word I touch. I arrange the 3 letter groups until they sound good. I add letters or repeat until I have a full name.
Goodwill is a good place for books and their cheap so even if I only use the book for this purpose I don't feel bad about spending the money.
PS I also found Manga at Goodwill!!

Ask your questions about DM/GMing or playing here or PM me on Gaia and I will try to answer them. As for as GMing a game right now I need to get a feel for the player's first. I have two game (single player) threads. Try them out and ham it up with the descriptions of your actions. Throw in your dialog and show me what you can do. After a few posts I'll get a fell how you play and will design a session for you.

Can you post an example in the first single player session? You said you would and I am still patiently waiting.

Question: Suppose you have an RP where the main character gets captured by a monster? What kind of RP is that? Service, Survival, or Adventuring? It's not during an Apocalypse or anything. The girl just got captured and is assuming she will die the next night.

Could be any. Is her goal escape or does she submit to the monster to survive. Is it an unintelligent monster? Is the monster truly evil or just a shade of darkness. Is the girl naughty enough to be happy with a monster master? these aspects can be fun to play and are not really part of the three core types. It is beyond the basics as most RPGs will develop into if played long enough. If your GM (or you) only uses mindless monsters they are missing out on a lot of good role playing material. One of my all time fav RP sessions is one where I had a monster patron who while not good wasn't completely evil. He use our group to hunt other evil trespassers in our territory. One of our team became his wife. My monsters never waste good woman flesh. If not compatible as a mate the use them as bate.

Cool! Thanks for the advice.
No, the monster isn't stupid. Actually, he's being played by someone else. Maybe that person will make his stupid, but I don't think so. And so far, we're not sure whether the girl will submit or not. She (me) is fighting, but the monster is sure she will submit.

Hey, I'll try. But we could have some copyright problems. I'm sure authors of stories can be: CoolMoonGoddess3, So-and-so, Yadda-yadda, etc. ^_^ That would make an interesting book. ^_^
