Taekwondo? Who does it?
PostPosted: Sun May 10, 2009 1:31 am

I study kenpo, but everyone thinks I studied taekwondo because I have real low stances and flashy kicks, but I never have studied it. Just flexable I guess

I've never seen a low stance in Tae Kwon Do >< whenever I stood low in TKD class, they would all go "what is he doing?" XD

I know TKD... I'm a Jr. Black Belt (I think that's what they call it ><)... it's the belt right before black... red with three black stripes, but my belt is red from the middle down and black from the middle up.

Yeah, I dunno what a TKD stance looks like...I always imagined it looked like a kenpo stance?!? It was some guys I worked out with that started saying it.

I've sparred with some TKD guys and noticed there was more of an emphasis on kicking, but didn't think to analyze the stance. xd I was more busy waiting for them to try to kick my head so I could send a thai RH to their crotch for a nice little 'Cup Check'.

lol "Cup Check" lol XD

Nah, they don't have what we see as "stances", like zenkutsu, kokutsu or fudo dachi. At least not in sparring, they just kinda jump around and kick... they do use some stances in their kata, though... they don't use punches in W.T.F. (World Tae Kwon Do Federation), many just kinda let their arms flail around and don't block ><.
Like with stances, they only use punches in their kata, but they are not allowed to punch in combat. In some competitions, they may be allowed to punch only in the stomach and chest area, but they barely do it anyway.

They do use punches in I.T.F. (International Tae Kwon Do Federation), though, but they still over-concentrate on kicks.

I've never really seen a real punch in TKD.

Here's a vid (WTF) that shows how they just jump around and always have their guard down ><

This one is a ITF kata, self defense, breaking and sparring demo. Notice how flashy the are in everything they do ><, specially in "self defense", everything is movie like and could never be applied to a real self defense situation. stare

They do have pretty strong kicks, though, I gotta give them points for that and they are pretty fast, too. Well, at least those who train hard, anyway.

I am of the understanding that TKD was taught to horse back warriors as a defensive if they had been knocked off their own horse. I never found the style very practical as I've never found myself in a situation (not intend to) where I've had to jump up 5 feet in the air and kick someone off their horse! Though that doesn't mean I wouldn't feel like the most bad a** person in the multiverse if I could!!! xd

LOL XD

Well, I've never heard that before ><... what I've read is that it was developed from older korean styles and had influence from karate (although I don't see where).

It's funny how Tae Kwon Do can be translated to "The way of kicking and punching" and yet the punches are almost absent in the style. ><

If you ask me, Taekwondo is a simple style of fighting. Its defently recommended to beginners I'm looking forward to taking Chito-Ryu Karate and Aikido in the near future.

How's it recommended for beginners?... every style has a "begginers level" >.<

Well, Taekwondo is a forum that anyone can take. You don't have to be flexible in order to take it. (Its really hard to explain...) GYAH! I sound so stupid! I just can't find the words. >_<' I may not sound very smart, but I know what I'm talking about. >_<'

My Dear, what you have just experienced is a Cranial Methane Inversion...otherwise known as a Brain Fart! We all do it...no one thinks you're stupid!

I think what you are trying to say is that it's a good introduction to martial arts. Some styles are more what we call Hard Karate or Hard Martial Arts with lots of intimidating subjects. For instance a timid person would never want to start out with something like Kali (filippino stick fighting) or Muai Thai...two of the more brutal styles.

TKD, to me anyway, seems to be an easier pill to swallow because it's pace is a little slower to progress then some of the other styles. And, I say this without having ever studied TKD...so maybe I don't have any clue as to what I am saying! sweatdrop

You're not stupid... it's ok if you can't explain it, it happens to everyone. But one thing I can tell you is that you do need flexibility in TKD, maybe even more that in some other styles, due to the fact that in TKD they like to kick high and jump a lot. But like in many other styles, they start you out easy.

I do understand what you mean... I just asked to see what your opinion was... Since TKD is mainly centered on kicks, it is relatively easy to start in it without worrying about getting too much info at once. =)

But I also believe that if your interest is Karate, the go for karate, if it's kung Fu, then go for Kung Fu. There is no "begginer style". =)

LOL Brain Fart... never hear of that!!! rofl rofl rofl

Hmm, slower to progress?... you mean like in the time it takes to get belts?

It can actually take you just about 2 to 3 years to become a black belt... I'd say that's pretty fast... I mean if that's what you meant >< sweatdrop

This is true, and also progression depends on the student. I don't really know where I was going with that, nor how to explain it. I understand that the progression through the ranks is relatively quick, but I can remember getting pretty roughed up in my frist classes in both schools where I studied kenpo, where as, the TKD presentations I have watched have seemed more graceful and delicate....(not in a sissy sort of way) in stark contrast to the training I've had in kenpo. Perhaps it's just the people I work with, but I've worked with a lot of different guys ranging from white to 9th black (John Sepulveda) and my general understanding is that kenpo is brutal even in the early ranks. We aren't taught to only defend, it's more like, defend first then play with your food before you finally devour it. I never really saw that in TDK, but like I said...totally naive about it too...

I'm totally up for learning more though!
