It was never intended to be a fight with the cops... it just kind of devolved that way. It was supported to be a labor rally to support strikers and add pressure to the eight-hour work day movement.
But then Anarchists have a particularly badass reputation in the states, and this is one of the reasons why. It also got tied into xenophobic tendencies... the Anarchists were always from Germany, Italy, or some crazy place like that.
This becomes a pattern with the nation-state vs. Left in general.

It is almost never intended to be a fight. And yeah. anti-anarchism (and to a lesser extent, anti-communism) was tied to racism, especially in the US. I know here, there was a massive pogrom season in Queensland in 1919 against the Russian working class neighborhoods because those Russians supported ******** disgusting.
