“Jenn, get out of the damn car!” Laura yelled.
A young red- head dressed in pink khaki shorts, baby blue spaghetti strap top and pink flip-flops stepped out of a yellow Volks Wagon Beetle. “Again, why must I go on this trip with you?” Jenn questioned.
“Because, Jenn, I’m your older sister and mom left me in charge of you when she died. Besides Jeff and I are getting married in two weeks and then leaving on our honeymoon. I won’t see you for a month!” Laura replied with a smile on her face.
“Oh a whole month, how will you EVER live without me?” Jenn snorted sarcastically. She pulled a small iPod shuffle from her front pocket, unraveled the ear pieces and popped them into her ears. It won’t be so bad, she thought to herself. The sea would be beautiful. She would get to sit back and relax, do anything she wanted on Jeff’s privet little island. The only downside – they had to take a boat. Jenn hated boats. They made her sick. ‘Why not a plane?’ She had asked, ‘because’, her sister had said ‘a boat is more relaxing and enjoyable… and cheap…’ Jenn laughed humorlessly at that. After the wedding Laura would have a nearly endless supply of money.
Jenn felt something. She looked to see that it was Jeff, who had set his hand on her shoulder, and was smiling in encouragement at her. She really had always liked Jeff; he was much more down to earth, unlike Laura. He made the boat ride seem more bearable.
“Come ON you two!” Laura called “The boat is leaving soon and I don’t want to go on this trip alone!”
Jeff laughed “I’m just getting Jenn’s last bag for her, give us two seconds!” He politely took the last black suitcase from one of the ship hands, and put one of his arms around Jenn’s shoulders guiding her to the dock with him….
A few hours later Jenn was woken by the sound of music playing up on deck. Her guess was that they had pulled into a small port to restock, and probably party the night away. “Give it a few hours and things will die down” she said to herself. Rolling over, she thought through her day. The ship had set sail only moments after Jeff and her had come on board. Jenn had spent maybe an hour on deck before she got sick; and went below deck to sleep.
With a small movement the lights flicked on, motion activated. Beside her there was a collection of her favorite books. She scanned through them quickly and pulled one from the center, one that she hadn’t read in awhile. About fifteen minuets later she was asleep again with a book in her face.
“Time to get up sleepy, you’ve been asleep since this time yesterday!” Jeff was running a towel through his hair and was in his swim shorts. He must have been working out again. “We’re stopping off in one last port before we get to the island. You should come up and party with us this time. I’ll see if I can get you a date with one of my friends, even.”
Jenn giggled sleepily under the blanket. “Oh yeah, that’d be great. Just what I want a big, rich, muscle man.”
“Okay, fine no date. But still come to the party?” He begged.
“Oh fine, I’ll come.” She said, sitting up.
“Good! You’ll want to get in the shower when Laura gets out. Dress nice, but not to nice.” Jeff winked at her and walked down the hall and out of sight.
It wasn’t long before Laura was out of the bathroom. “Hurry, Jenn! The party is set for seven, and it’s already five- thirty!”
Jenn mumbled to herself as she shut the door of the bathroom. The hot water in the shower woke her up completely. She took her time deciding what to wear. When finally chose she could hear the music start up outside and the sound of peoples voices.
The air above deck was cool. Perfect weather for the slim black tank top, sleek black Capri pants, and adorable black flats she was wearing. There were at least twenty people, and she could see more making their way on the ship. Jenn wandered around for a bit, and was offered a drink. It smelled like beer. She drank it anyway.
A few drinks later she still wasn’t in the mood for dancing, and went to the edge of the ship to sit. She noticed they were moving, or maybe that was due to her imagination from all the drinking she had done. Regardless of the drinking she knew she shouldn’t be getting closer to the water like she was. That’s when it hit. The water was cold, like ice, worse, it was burning her skin. It hurt. She tried to scream but no sound came out. Only more icy water filled her mouth, nose, and lungs. In her drunk and terrified state she had no idea what to do. The more she tried to scream, the more the water burned and tore apart her insides. Her vision became blurred, her screams became weak, and eventually she was simply frozen in death’s grip.
