Cats can feel things without coming into contact with them. They have pressure sensors under their skin which can detect changes in temperature and pressure. Don't believe me~? Those of you with cats can test it out for yourselves.

While your cat is napping, sneak up on the little creature. The results will be inconclusive if your cat wakes up at this point. Hold your hand a little bit over your feline and make gentle stroking motions. Your cat should wake up and start purring.

Some sources say that cats can detect these changes up to a good thirty-six feet away. Others say only thirty-three. I just think it's kinda fun to mess with my cat's unique instincts in a harmless manner.

I've always noticed cat's being super . . . aware. Of everything.

That's their secret. It gives them an omniscience that can almost rival my own.

Useless Fact Two: Oyfn Pripitchik

Back when some major recording stars sang in Yiddish, few of the ones who did failed to record the song "Oyfn Pripitchik" (By the Fireplace). Some left it short and diabetes-inducing, like Aunt Rivke's strudel. Others sang its longer form, which is slightly morose like zeyde's tales of shtetl life. In either case, the excessive use of diminutives in the song makes me picture "der Rebbele" drinking vodka out of a thimble. Here's what I mean:

"Oyfn pripitchik (by the little fireplace) brent a fayrl (burned a little fire), un in shtub is heys (and the room is warm), un der Rebbele lernd kleyne kinderlakh dem alef-beys (and the beloved Rabbi taught the dear little children the Hebrew letters)."

Yeah, I'll bet the beloved Rebbe has to be drinking schnapps out of an acorn. However, Leo Fuld sang it. If it's good enough for Leo Fuld, who kept Yiddish on the radio after the Barry Sisters and before Chava Alberstein, it's good enough for me. Then again, isn't kitsch a Yiddish word~?

Edit: Just to make this more uselessly factual, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that "pripit" is Serbo-Croatian for buzzed, tipsy or slightly drunk. "-Tchik", or however you spell it in the system you're using, is a diminutive which exists in many Slavic languages, including Yiddish and Serb--Croatian.

Another interesting point about the song is that it uses largely Slavic vocabulary, though the rhyme scheme is Germanic.
