Hey everybody! I'm here today to discuss about things that we have either heard about or came up with ourselves. Which of them sounds more sci-fi than fantasy? Which of them are the complete opposite?
Post here if you can think of something cool that fits in with the theme of the sub-forum. Take my example for instance!
I was dreaming the other day more than a few crazy dreams, when I woke up, I was left wondering what could be better than to have the stuff from yer dreams be a reality when you wake up? Sounds more fantastic than science fiction, doesn't it?
Well, how about if in the future we would become so busy that we didn't have time for shopping? I think that a good solution might be to shop while we sleep. I was thinking of a society that had a device that enables people to go shopping while they dream and through said dream, be able to sort of charge things to their ethereal Mastercard or Visa, if you will. That way, by the time you wake up in the morning you can have what you ordered delivered at your home. Wouldn't that be convenient?
That, of course, is just one idea and I suppose I got the inspiration for it after watching an episode of Futurama where Fry (the main character) has a commercial sort of pushed into his dream.
So, what do you think about this? Do you have a similar device you'd like to talk about? If so, share!

If I did shopping in my dreams, then I really don't know if what I woke up with would be worth eating, wearing or....using in any other way. How would you pay for the stuff anyway? Draw money from a cloud bank or something? It'd be a bit of a dangerous thing. You could end up dreaming you're rich, or poor, and if it came from your bank in the conscious world you'd need to know the exact figures, and even then how the bloody heck would the money be transferred?
There are so many inconsistencies that I just....can't make it sound believable at all.
We have internet shopping (even for groceries) nowadays anyway, so if you put something in a sci-fi world where everyone puts in a standing order which is the same every week, and whatever else you want you just add it on when you have a few minutes spare, but have to add those things in by a certain time during that week, otherwise you have to do everything individually or wait until the next week.

Yeah, but that's not exactly how I envisioned it working either. I think that a system like that would have to be completely revised; and I mean thoroughly! Like you say, it could be complete chaos! However, if they can do things like have you shop for online games from the console you are using, it might work in a similar way. Imagine if you will, that you are a console like the X-box 360. If you have Microsoft points or however they're called, you can buy stuff on the X-box live arcade, right? Well the dream network could work in a similar way. How would you get the credits to buy? You'd have to get paid in credits that would be compatible with all of the existing networks. It'd be like all consoles accepting Wii points, for example. They obviously wouldn't be called Wii points, he-he.
So Mel, haven't you ever seen a device on a show/movie and wondered how it worked? I always wondered how the Warp thing worked in Star Trek. I suppose there's some info about it on wikipedia, huh? I should take a look one of these days...

So I've been told, when a Star Trek fan flagged up to the producers that warp drive (without any kind of protection) would result in being flattened into nonexistence - or something of the likes. So, they then said something like "oh, err, well....ok they have a forcefield that stops that from happening."
Apparently it was something like that.

I think a friend of mine told me something about that, yeah...
So Mel, don't you have any comments on devices you have seen at all?
BTW, I've been thinking about the story behind the new CV game: Order of Ecclesia and, I keep wondering how they made the Glyph system; don't you? I mean, if Barlowe used some kind of machine then it would go into sci-fi but, if he didn't and used other means like magic or incantations then it would fall in the category of fantasy and magic and it should be discussed in another thread, right?

Hey I was reading your guys' conversation . . . dream shopping? interesting! It sounds complicated for a dream, though. One thing I've always wondered, though: what about flying? like Kyle XY type stuff, with telekinesis and all that stuff. If we used enough of our brains, you think we could fly through mindpower? That's something I always dream about . . . and I saw the thread was empty so I thought I'd post ha ha

Cool! Someone else added something here. Thanks!
Yeah, the whole shopping does sound more complex than it might actually be but, that's just something I thought of.
I gotta say, I think I have seen something like what you suggest before. I am pretty sure that some alien concepts have had aliens who have such advanced brains that they can do all sorts of things by mere though like, communicate, fly and even teleport. Not all of the stories have them do all of those things mind you but I'm pretty sure that's the jest of it. However, that isn't exactly what the thread is about. I mean, having a special ability (in this case, the mind being involved) doesn't make it an invention. How about an invention that enhanced our brains so we could do all sorts of things? Then it would be something to talk about here, don't you agree?

sweatdrop ha ha yeah sorry . . . now that I read the title of the thread, you do have a point . . ha ha jk. Hmm maybe an implant in the brain, like through the ear, to enhance mental abilities? that's the first thing that popped into my mind. Maybe a high-tech chip thingie . . . cool xd k gotta go. Bye!

It's ok, I can understand how we sometimes get so busy that we forget the name of a thread we just got into, he-he. mrgreen
I like the idea of a brain enhancer green dragon but I developed something more complex myself. I'm not gonna go into more details cuz I'm rather protective of my work but we can keep discussing other possibilities and certainly other inventions, yes. 3nodding
So, does anyone else want to talk about a certain invention they may have seen somewhere? How about the revolving rings in Superman 2? I always thought they were weird looking when I was a kid. If you want to see them, I could find a link in youtube. 3nodding

Like, holy crap, old thread, new girl!
In my story, I introduced a few things:
"Light-guns." Essentially pistols that fire lasers. Like that hasn't been thought of before!
The "Light-sword." This is essentially a light saber, but without the Force and functioning by firing two lasers between two protected pieces of metal on either side of a structural support pole.
The "Holographic Projection Device, or H.P.D." This is a microchip implant that is inserted just behind the ear and wired into the brain. It is activated by a certain touch pattern and while active it projects a hologram over the user's body. Brain signals cause the hologram to react to the user's facial expressions and body movements, and it's so realistic that the only way to tell if someone is using it is to turn off the lights. I had a lot of fun thinking that one up.
Cybernetic eyes: In this book, they are experimental, but one of the characters happens to acquire one which used brain signals to auto-focus on faraway targets, essentially acting like a personal telescope. Except it's really hard to get used to, and much nausea may be involved while trying to assimilate.
Regarding the Warp Drive--there is a lever on The Explorer (the ship they used to get from Earth to their system) that is labeled "Warp Drive," and they can't figure out how to get it to work. Little do they know that the people who built it couldn't get it to work, either. Thought you might have a laugh at that. XD

Thank you for reviving one of our threads Alanora!
Wow, you sure do have some cool inventions, don't you girl? I love the last two you posted.
Let's see, I know the "laser/light" guns have been popular since before the 60's (I think) but if there's a way you can give them a good twist, you should go ahead. 3nodding
You know, I made a sort of light sword in one of my stories but it's not made with lasers or even light. The user has to infuse his or her own energy into the blade so that it glows and becomes more powerful. Needless to say, no ordinary person can use it.
The HPD sounds great and a bit funny cuz, it's almost as if you were referring to a PHD, he-he. It sounds like you are a very imaginative person, way to go! Guess what? I made an invention of my own that has funny initials but I'll post it at the end of my reply. 3nodding
Hmm, it seems like the eyes you made up could be loved by Galileo. I had a similar idea but not as an invention, I had thought that one of my characters had special eyes and could do something similar cuz her eyes were just that evolved. Since they're her eyes, there's no nausea involved as you may have already guessed.
So you thought I might have a laugh at that Warp Drive thing? I don't know if you were thinking about all of us or just me but if it was just me, you had the right idea. lol
Ok, here's the invention I had come up with: Prototype Macrocosm Simulator P.M.S.: Anyone who has seen Star Trek has to know what I'm talking about when I mention their holographic chambers, right? Well this is similar but the difference is that instead of holograms, the user is transported to a sort of parallel dimension where almost everything can be modified with a computer program attached to a device the users must wear (or have implanted). I thought about this cuz of the word Macrocosm and what it means. Does anyone here have a clue as to what I'm talking about? neutral

I think I see where you were going with that, playing off of the theory that the same traits tend to repeat themselves on all levels of reality?
...I'm also beginning to draft ideas, now that I'm writing the sequel, for a specialized space suit--with wings, because they have them--that functions as both protection and weapon. Think of it more like a mecha. I'm thinking of calling it the "Anti-Armament Assault Unit," or the "A3U." Since a war is breaking out between two planets and one is more technologically advanced than the other, the more advanced planet would have these. This is also a machine that functions by reading brain signals to be a much more effective, flexible fighting instrument in a zero-grav environment. ^_~

Well, the PMS chamber as a concept is harder to explain than I first anticipated but that's the jest of it. In my mind, I saw it more as something that you could enter through a door, like a chamber inside a ship. The only difference is that the thing that creates the door is also creating the macrocosm and it's so vast that you could get lost in it just like you would in space. Well, that's assuming you had the means to travel extensively through the PMS chamber. BTW, I thought you (and other women) might get a kick out of the name of this chamber in particular, he-he. mrgreen
Wow! That sounds great Alanora. Even the name seems cool! It reminds me a bit of the E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo). You know why, right? xd Anywho, if there was such a thing, I doubt it could work properly without it having the function of reading brain signals. Great idea! 3nodding

Holy lord, my computer epically failed for a while there. Sorry it's taking me so long to reply! I like that idea (even though the acronym P.M.S. cracks me up a little).
And yeah, I tried to think of a way that the suit could work without it, but that failed. So brain signals it is. XD

It's fine Alanora, really! It is taking me long to come back sometimes too so I understand. BTW, the acronym is meant to be funny. I like to add humor to my stories even if they are supposed to be serious. After all, a life without jokes would be completely boring, don't you agree? Also, I always had the idea that in the beginning of the project, the people involved had a hard time getting things ready so the chamber was a bit of a pain to develop. xd
Great! I'm glad you were able to work things out. wink
