How to Role Play

A few Gaians may not know what role playing (rping) is, so here's a forum to explain it, and some useful tips about role playing.

Role Playing

Role playing is taking a role of a character in a story of some sort. You act out your character, whether they're mean and rough, or cheerful and kind. Usually, role plays have more than one character being played, so there are others that will participate (role play) with you. Based on your type of role plays and ones that you find interesting, you shouldn't only act out, but also speak out. An opposing character would likely greet your character, so normally you would answer, whether you ignore them, or greet them back. But, even if you do ignore the character, try to let the opposing puppetteer know.

Ex.

Quote:
Christine walked over to Darrell. "Hello!" She greeted with a smile.

Quote:
Darrell glanced up from his book, but didn't answer.

There are several types of writing styles when role playing. Like the sentences on the examples above, they are past tense meaning they've just occured. Another type is present tense meaning they're happening right now.

Ex.

Past Tense (letters in bold are letters that make the sentence sound like it's already transpired)
Quote:
Christine arrived home from school, and was exhausted.

Present Tense (letters in bold are letters that make the sentence sound like it's happening right now)
Quote:
Darrell takes his backpack and walks towards the school.

Creating Good Role Plays

There are times when the role plays listed aren't what you'd actually role play in. So, in that case, I suggest you create your own. I'll explain to you things that are needed in creating role plays and how to popularize it.

Lesson #1 (What is it about?);

Your role play must have a subject, it's base/structure. There are many different types of role plays. Here's a list of some popular subjects/types;

School RP
War RP
Family/House RP
Vampire/Lycan/Angel/Neko/etc RP
Love/Drama RP

Lesson #2 (Where is it taking place?);

Usually, I wouldn't really fuss about this, but sometimes I dislike role plays that have no settings. For example, people would likely create a Love/Drama RP because it's pretty popular but, they usually would just explain that there's a love triangle, blah blah blah, and that you play as one of the characters. That would sometimes cause me to dislike it.

Ex.

Love/Drama RP
STORY

You are stranded with two of the hottest students from your school. They both have a crush on you and you have a crush on both of them, equally. Who will you choose and what will happen next?! You decide!

There's no point in role playing when you don't even know where it's taking place at!

Lesson #3 (Why should people join your role play?);

It's nice to know why people want you in their role play, but what I mean is, "Is there any excitement/drama/action?" This question is a way to help you build a better role play. Try to make it not too exciting and detailed.

Ex.

Action RP
STORY

Your plane crashed at an island unknown to the world. All electricity has died and you've got 10 other people that have survived the crash. You suddenly hear a roar not far from where you are, as a giant raptor-like creature begins to stalk you. You look around you and 3 people have already gone missing. You hear a voice inside your head... Last one standing, will it be you?

I know it might attract quite a number of people but sticking to simple and not too detailed out role plays will be easier. Also, it gets boring when one thing suddenly happens and then another comes. Trouble after trouble after trouble, can get boring.

~>><<~

Things that must be in your role play;

(This will help you organize and plan things out easier.)

Story
(read paragraphs above)
Rules
(read Rules and Interests)
Profile Skeleton
You must create a profile skeleton that other's can fill out. There are rare times when creators don't have profile skeletons, so the profiles are mixed.

Example of a Profile Skeleton
Your Username: (Your Gaian Name)
Name/Puppet: (Your character's name)
Age: (Your character's age)
Gender/Sex: (Is your character a male or female?)
Orientation/Sexuality: (Does your character dig guys/girls/guys and girls/etc?)
Race: (This is here if you're in a werewolf/vampire/neko/etc. role play)
Bio/Background: (Your character's past)
Personnality: (What's your character like?)
Appearance: (What does your character look like?)

Usually, beside the "Appearance" they'd have, "Anime Picture please." To get an anime picture, go to http://www.photobucket.com/ or click here. Search for a picture, and copy it's IMG code.

Anyways, back to our topic;
Accepted Profiles
This would usually be posted if you'd wanted people to send you their profiles through Personal Messaging (PM). If not through PM, they'd post it on the forum, itself.
Black List
If someone had violated a rule/rules, I suggest you list their name here. It'll show others that that Gaian isn't really good at following rules, thus other creators wouldn't allow that person to enter their RP.
White List
The White List is usually shown when there are role players that have helped you in creating the role play.

If there's a post that I've missed, don't hesitate to tell me. Everyone makes mistakes.

Rules and Interests

Well done! You've created your first role play. Now what? Well, once you've got the story down, you should start thinking about it's rules. You might be asking, "Why do I need rules?!" The rules are like a road and your role play is a car on that road. Without rules in your role play, things can't be done. And everyone would simply goof off. Just like in life, there are rules in role playing.

Rules that have been frequently used;

-No God/Mod.
This means you cannot have all the power in the world. Also, this might refer to, sometimes in action or war role plays, your power(s). It's unfair if someone has a power, in which one touch can kill you. That's injustice, and no one would role play with that Gaian.
-Romance reaches only PG-13
Read Gaia rules, you can't cyber here! That's gross. Sure, you can kiss and call each other luvey-dovey names, and hug each other, but don't go too far. Seriously, you don't see two people having sex on the street, do you?
-Keep Cussing Limited.
I even cuss every now and then, but that's expressing my character. Just try not to cuss too much. Also, if you are going to cuss, let's say the F word, replace letters with "*" simple as that. If you don't, you're risking the chance of your Gaian being reported.
-Be atleast semi-literate.
What this rule is suggesting is that you try to spell correctly, grab a dictionary, use the computer, w/e. Also, this may mean that the creator of the RP would like people to post more than 2 or 3 sentences.
-Send me your Profiles.
I've had a couple of people break this rule, every once in a while. They'd post it in the RP, when the creator want's he/she to send it to the creator him/herself. It gets annoying, too. What this means is, fill out a profile skeleton (usually provided by the creator) and PM (personal message) it to him/her. Sometimes, they'd also add another rule that says, "PM title should be: ________." They sometimes have this because it's to let them know you've actually read the rules.
-Number of Characters you can have: __"
This rule is explaining to you that you can have more than 1 character, but sometimes there's a limit to the number of characters that you can role play in. There are RPs that may have "[1x1]" meaning there's only the creator and another role player, and the role play is only in need of one more player (including the creator). When this does happen, usually both Gaians would role play 2 or more characters, throughout the whole role play. There's still a chance, though, that the creator will have a limit of RP characters one can have.

If there's a rule that you don't understand or you do not understand any of the above send me a PM, and I'll try to explain it clearer.

Interests;

To keep a role play popular and with active members, you must know what the role players are interested in. Of course, you should have a say in your role play. Just because one asks for something you dislike, doesn't regularly mean that you should agree. I'm 100% sure that you'll find others with the same interests as you.

Here's an example of a pretty interesting role play story;

Ex.
Role Play Story Example
What's this? A mansion in the middle of the forrest? But how-- You hear howls and screams behind you. You hurry to the large house, as the rain begins to fall. Up high, the sky is pitch black, so you trip every now and then. The building's light's are turned on so it makes you feel safer, the closer you get there. "Hello?" You call out to the manor. You find that the door has a bell built into it. As you ring the bell, you hear more howls behind you, which causes you to quicken. The door opens, and standing infront of you are two creatures, both handsome and beautiful. Their eyes flash several shades of red. "Well come in, please." says the female creature. Her voice lures you into their home, so you take steps into the mansion. The large heavy door closes slowly, but you're too focused on the two gorgeous beings. Once you're finally inside, you find many more creatures alike the creatures that welcomed you. A voice in your head echoes... Once you're in, you'll never get out...

-By iFunkeh Cookeh

The story above takes place deep inside a forest, inside a manor, as you might've already read. And, the unnamed character (you) finds a mansion filled with gorgeous vampires, of all ages. The role play was a success, I've recieved more than 10 profiles, and it had reached page 22, with a lot of active role players.

If you are having trouble of thinking up of interests, send me a PM and I'll be glad to work things out.

Characters

There's a lot of thinking when it comes to your character(s). You must know how they'd react if someone greets them, if they got in trouble, etc. What I'm basically talking about is their personality. Are they serious and unfriendly? Or are they always cheerful and thinks about others before themselves? These are questions that you should be asking yourself.

Tip #1:
If you have chosen a picture for your character, match their appearance with their personality!

Bad Ex.
Quote:
Your Username: i am an example
Name/Puppet: Jenny
Age: 16
Gender/Sex: Female
Orientation/Sexuality: Straight
Race: Human
Bio/Background: i am an example
Personnality: I am serious and I hate my parents.
Appearance:
User Image

Does that girl look serious and a parent-hating girl to you?! (My point, exactly.)

Tip #2:
If you have chosen a picture for your character, make sure it matches your profile atleast 75%.

Tip #3:
If your character is unkind, dislikes people, a social outcast, and mean, then act it out! It's fun, trying out different personalities!

Good Ex.
Gaian #1: Kimberly followed Micheal, but stayed behind him. I hope he doesn't notice me! Kimberly took a step towards him, but suddenly tripped and fell.

Gaian #2: Micheal heard a thump behind him. He turned to see who it was, and was unimpressed by his discovery. "Quit following me! I've already told you, I'm not going to apologize to your friend! It's her problem if I don't like her the way she likes me." He glared at Kimberly and then walked away, without care of helping her up.

Now, wasn't that exciting? It's interesting, trying out a personality completly opposite from your own! Heck, I prefer role playing a devilish personality, even if in RL (real life) I still cry whenever something dies, even a plant!

Kk, I'm getting off topic. As I was saying, role playing is a great way to try out and express out different styles of lives.
