The clan hideout is a deep cave, which leads down underground. Though sometimes cold it's comfortable, and clan members bring in leaves and grass for bedding. Outside the cave is a vast forest, which Riyu paces every day, marking the clan territory, and scouting for intruders.

Riyu awoke, and stretched. The sun was just rising, and it was time for her daily patrol. She rose and walked out of the mouth of the cave, carefully trying not to waken her clan. She looked back, and as she did she accidentally kicked a stone. She froze as some of the members stirred, but when they didn't awaken, she slipped out into the forest for her patrol.

Blake Stepped out of the forest grinning, "Think you could get away quietly? I didn't think anyone would be awake at this time!" he whispered "Mind if I join you?" he smiled.

Riyu smiled back warmly. "Of course. I could do with the company." She walked up to Blake, then started towards the forest. "So anyway, what were you up to this early, if you don't mind me asking?"

The smile shrank slightly, then regained its size. "Nothing much, patrolling for food. there are plenty of fruit and vegetables. And a fresh stream leading from the mountains near the forest. The only other thing I could find was a small family of rabbits near the south-west edge of the forest. But you don't think I would count them as food?" He grinned as he reported the last line.

Riyu ignored the smile, she trusted him and what he was doing was his business. Though she didn't believe scouting for food was all he was doing. Her smile widened. "Good work. The rabbits can be left alone, the fish in the stream and fruits will do us fine. After our patrol is over, we can go freshen up in the stream before heading back with fish for the clan."

He smiled back, "Good Idea, I wonder what the sleepy-heads will do when they wake up to the smell of cooking kipper?" Again, he grinned as he said the last sentence.

Riyu laughed. "They'll probably eat both us and the kipper!" After laughing for a while, she said "We'll be standing around laughing untill tonight if we don't get going. I always start my patrol to the east, then come round the territory's boundaries."

Blake laughed too, then said "ok, i'll come too, although I normally go west!"

Just inside the cave, Alice wriggled in her sleep, then suddenly sat upright, yelling. "I'm drowning in footwear!! ... Wierd dream.." she rubbed her head, shook her tail, and got up - when she saw the two figures in the mouth of the cave she ran over to see who it was. "Hiya! Where are we going?" she asked, loudly, then went quiet at the last word when she realised some were still sleeping. She grinned at Riyu and Blake sheepishly.

Riyu smiled. "It seems we will be travelling as a three." She turned to Alice. "We were just about to start on the morning patrol, where we patrol the forest for food and intruders. Would you like to join us?"

Blake heard them speaking, but wasn't paying attention. He was thinking about something. The strange markings outside a cave in the center of the entire forest. He had read about them somewhere, he just couldn't remember where.

"Well normally I start east and follow the boundaries round back to the cave. But today I think we'll take a little detour to a stream that Blake has found. We can cool of and grab some fish for the clan." Riyu smiled. This patrol would be a lot less lonely.

Blake had already started walking while thinking about something else, that book, he just couldn't think which book.
Blake was puzzled. For once.
