So Fullmetal Alchemist 2 made it's debut in the world of anime Yesterday. Firstly I would have to say Shinsen subs did an amazing job of getting it and translating it within mere hours of air time and also making it good quality. (hope I don't get in trouble for mentioning them.) I hope they can keep it up through out the series.
So where to start. I suppose the first thing that hits you when you start it up is the strange place it decided to take off at. The first episode has nothing to with anything at all. It's a filler episode feel free to call it episode 0 if it makes you feel better. From watching it it's simply a way to gather your attention to the new style and reintroduce the characters. I suppose they figured since this anime is being based off the manga instead if they just started it off like that then they would lose audience. Since the first few episodes of the original actually stick with the manga to an extent.
The animation and drawing style might be the second thing you notice. I wasn't exactly thrilled with the new style they added to it at times it felt like I was watching a flash video with how different the characters are drawn (except al and hughes they look awesome all the time for some reason). But most of the time watching the animation is awesome and it grows on you over time I've watched it about 6 times and I am sort of getting used to it. I'm sure the animation and drawing will get better as the show goes on and it might change a bit considering in the beginning chapters of the manga the characters look somewhat different from where they are now. (Think like inuyasha beginning, okay then ending rather good drawing and animation.)
For me the third thing I noticed was Roy's voice and this might not bother anyone at all or you might not have noticed. But toru ohkawa is not our roy anymore. I could tell by the fact that that underlying arrogance is missing from his voice he sounds more boyish, I suppose that would be the word for it. Our new voice is Miki Shinichiro who does urahara (bleach). And Roy basically sounds exactly the same. When I first heard it I couldn't help but go "mata dozo" (which you would get if you ever played a Japanese copy of bleach and you go to urahara shop.) ANYWAY, it's going to take me awhile to get used to this voice as well as Hawkeye since her voice is now orisaka fumiko. (Whats this bleach invasion don't they have some bleach anime shows to do?) But for a moment I didn't notice and i don't think her voice really makes much of a difference on the character like Roy's so far.
So when we start getting more into the episode, skipping the totally random villain who plays no part in anything further than his one episode debut. You get back to hearing the short jokes... oh those short jokes. Now some people miss them and others don't. I like the new spin on the way they animated it it's very entertaining. Also remembering ed's style of transmutation occasionally he makes awkward things that have his head in like chibi form on them you get to see that show up more now yay for those random moment of humor amongst serious scenes.
We also actually get funny things from Roy too when Hughes pops up, you get to see his annoyance with his best friend displayed much differently from his over the phone conversations and more rather funny Roy parts. (I don't want to give anything away since most people probably aren't going to see it for awhile.)
Next thing is when it cuts to commercial break. This part is like I am playing soul Calibur or something. You get Ed at first with FMA printed ont the picture and somebody says "fullmetal alchemist" in english (that was awkward in itself). Then we cut back in and you get the same thing only with an Al picture and a different voice. Soooo, like your playing soul calibur. I am like waiting for the "hit the start button" to pop on the bottom of the screen after hearing this.
so last point on my rant last point I have been seeing a lot of negativity for the opening and ending of fma compared to the original's op and ed's. Yui sings our op which if your a bleach watcher you know rolling star. I like the music it's slow and builds up nicely. The animation also follows the same flow pretty well. The problem with the op is not only does Yui's singing not sound apealing to some. (which is fine.) The fact that there is parts where Riza and Winry are actually animated to look like they are singing the lyrics is a no. I personally like it.. (Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I welcome opposition to see all sides of things.)Actually I loved it. Being that I make AMV's ocassionally to have something like that just adds to my arsonal of usable things. Which I thought after watching it was fracking awesome. Did I mention riza looked hot..... xd Um... next!
I can't say I am over the moon for the ed but it's a very interesting animation with like crayola drawings. After watching it a few times it looks like a parody of the original in parts. As for the music I am not going to download it to my ipod but it's not some strange god awful music.
Anyway, It was only the first episode and on top of that a filler! Who has ever heard of a filler being the first episode? But I give it a 8/10 for now just for having to get used to the animation and Roy and Riza's voices being different. But for being a filler it follows the mood of the FMA manga very well bringing in the humor during serious parts that the manga displays very often. I look forward to seeing how the real story goes.
Side note: As it progresses I am sure my rating will go up (because fma is awesome obviously and I have a love for it otherwise I would have never made this guild.) Till then that's where I stand. Now I demand everyone who love anime and or FMA go watch this. (probably the latter since you joined this guild or bothered even looking in here.)
Or not if you don't wanna be like me and wonder if it's next week already so I can see more. lol. (Seriously.. Sunday be here please...)
