The check engine light came on on my way home from work. It needs a new air filter (which I'm going to get first thing tomorrow to see if it helps) but it also has a weird muffler noise when revved. Like a sputtering almost. Kinda like it has a differnt exhaust, but it's still stock. =(
It's at 77.5k miles and won't need an oil change until 79.9. Help?????

Prolly wont help much, but check to see if you dont have an exhaust leak, or if any part of your muffler is open.
Coworker had a funny fitting aftermarket-muffler, sounded like it had an exhaust leak.

if you have "puffs of air" coming from your tail pipe and low power you have a mis fire...could set your MIL off...but it can be a lot of other things...so you need to have it scanned... other then misfire codes, codes for Oxygen senser pop up often, well at work they do. you almost at 80K miles so a tune up and belts and maybe coolant flush are on there way.

I'll keep that in mind. Maybe I could get that done next month with my next oil change.
But I took it to Autozone and they said, after scanning it, that a vacuum hose had a crack, or was loose. I'm taking it to the shop on monday. crying

A vacuum hose? Like which one (PCV, Brake Booster, etc.)? I don't know how a vacuum hose would make weird exhaust sounds. I know when my PCV hose got a tear, it made my intake and engine idle sound different because it was sucking in all that extra air into the intake manifold... but no effect on the exhaust.

It did end up being a vacuum hose.
I took it to Autozone where they did there thing.
Taking it to a shop on friday that will hopefully be able to locate and fix it for me.

now I haven't seen or heard it all...but vacuum hoses I see are fine till the car is like 20 years old...I've seen 60's Benzs still have all original under hood and run like it was the day they where made.
a vacuum hose being lose or cracked should make the car run funny, cause there is unmetered air if you have a MAF system and if MAP it will still run wrong cause it's a leak after the throttle plate.
*edit* you sure it's not a leaking intake manifold gasket?

Well, I took it in Friday and as much as I was leaning towards a vacuum hose or spark plugs, it ended up being the fuel filter. They said it was so clogged and nasty that they couldn't even blow through it. They replaced it, 50 bucks, but the car runs soooooo much better now. I love it.
But now that's out of the way, the rims are next.
