History: Vanessa was born during a lightning storm on Halloween on a major converge of leylines. No one knew that the hospital sat on this convergence, and a bolt of lightning hit it while Nessa's mother was giving birth. The hospital acted as a lightning rod and channeled that power down into Grace, into these leylines which then looped and caused a mystical power surge. The initial surge from the lightning had stopped Nessa's heart, while the mystical surge brought her back, giving her psionic powers. Because of all of that, Nessa is tied into the leylines and the mystical power Grace.
Growing up, she was rather spoiled by her parents Wesley and Morrigan, and her powers weren’t overly noticeable beyond her minor (at the time) telepathic powers. One thing that her parents tended to notice about her was the fact that Vanessa always seemed to be full of static electricity, seeming to shock everyone around her. Hers was a very happy childhood until she was twelve, when she and her family had decided to spend the day in the park. The day was beautiful and clear, but there was a sudden lightning strike that struck Vanessa, and though it didn’t seem to harm her at all, it killed both of her parents who had been holding her hands at the time.
She should have gone to live with her mother’s sister and her husband (the McClouds), but the sisters were estranged at the time, and Vanessa ended up in the child welfare system, bouncing from foster family to foster family. She first discovered that the two lightning strikes she’d suffered in her life had given her powers when she was 14 and one of her foster brothers, who was 17 at the time, tried to molest her. She threw him off of her with lightning that came from her hands and stopped his heart. Panicking, she tried shocking him again and succeeded in restarting his heart. When he came to, he threatened to inform the A.S.E.A. that she was a super unless she gave him what he wanted, her. Vanessa in turn threatened that if he reported her, or ever tried to touch her again, she’d kill him again, and this time she wouldn’t bring him back. Shortly thereafter, she was sent to live with a different foster family.
It was when she lived with this family that she started stealing. At first it was just simple things like food since the new foster family considered her a burden, and fed her just barely enough to survive, never mind spending their money, or the money they got from the Child Welfare system on clothing for her. She started shoplifting items of clothing, always careful to not get caught. She taught herself how to watch out for security cameras, and how to remove anti-theft tags from clothing and other necessities she needed.
Soon, she found the process to be an adrenaline rush, and worked her way up to stealing more secured and complicated things, leading her to create the persona of Vixen, the mischievous thief so that no one would learn her real identity. After creating Vixen, Nessa decided that she would only steal from those who deserved it, corrupt government officials and the like, and give a portion of it to those who need it. Especially orphanages.
Finally, when Vanessa was 16, her Aunt Bridget tracked her down, having found out what happened to her niece, and brought her home to life with her and her Uncle Connor. Her cousin, Bosley, was away at college, but would often come home to visit. She didn’t trust them at first, worried that this would be just like her foster families, but soon, she began to regain the sense of family she’d lost when her parents had been killed. While living with her aunt and uncle, Vanessa kept all of her abilities hidden, and would only steal things if a quality job arose for a good cause.
She graduated high school and went on to college to study fashion design, having designed and made the costume for Vixen, and always wanting to be a designer. She moved into an apartment near the college, and so she wasn’t home with her remaining family when they were killed a few months ago, to include her cousin. Since their deaths, she has completely thrown herself into her studies and has started taking more jobs that are more difficult for her to steal. It’s almost as though she doesn’t necessarily care about living anymore.
