The Car

Taking a page off of Super Panda's fun-filled idea, I submit this challenge contest. This month's challenge is with a USDM Honda Civic DX Hatchback circa 1996-1997 (reference). That's right, you get a beater with no power anything... not even air conditioning! The car is one of the two pictured below (you must start with one of the two colors).

Submissions

Submissions must be given by April 15, 2008. The winner will be announced May 1, 2008.

Modifications

Now with your new pride and joy, you've only managed to save up $3,000 (US) to screw around with. Originally, you were saving up for a car of your own, but your dead grandpa left you this thing. You can't sell it, or use the money for another car... because that'd make you a big fat enema sack for selling something left to you by your dead grandpa, and it was his dream that his Civic be a "cool" car once it became yours. And we don't want enema sacks to be part of our contest, right? But at least you know it runs well, because your grandpa kept meticulous records of proper maintenance.

Adding options from the factory are priced as follows (via Edmunds.com's used car price calculator):

Power Steering: $42
Air Conditioning: $142
AM/FM/CD Audio System: $42
4-Speed Automatic Transmission: $162

Parts must be purchased new, and you must link to your reference/purchase site. Pricing for shipping and installation labor will not be counted.

Prizes

A prize for the winning entry will be given. What it is, depends on the amount of entries we get. The winner will be determined via a poll conducted by me for a broad range of tastes and enthusiasm.

Have fun, and good luck!

Even with only 3 grand, it being a Civic makes it easier than that Beamer 3nodding

I had fun envisioning that BMW though. I actually wanted it by the time I was done.

It's a base Civic CX Hatchback. It comes with manual, unless you option it with the automatic (which is a given option through the rules, just make sure you pay the price listed).

You have to pay me to take automatic, lol.
The only auto's I don't mind come standard in Automatic. And if there was a option for manual I'd probably take manual.

You guys make this damn hard, I saw the one with the BMW and didn't notice we'd have to put so much detail in. xd

But This one seems easier so i'll give it a shot.

Well if its USD 3K, then WE have about AUD$4,262.61 to play with. Not even enough to get the car ready for Improved Production racing, but I reckon it could be a decent club day weapon.

Well i'm just gonna keep it simple for now until I Get the hang of this game, Just stick to new rim's and that jazz. Unless I find a Good Link for Engine work then she's staying stock.

cool a stock EJ hatch. but only 3k? better spend it wisely...

lets see....I'll go with the Midori Green hatchback (top one)since the exterior still looks in pretty good condition. it must have been garaged its whole life. It has side moldings so its a DX model, with the 106hp D16Y7 SOHC non-VTEC engine. Its also a 96 or 97, with the older style front bumper. love it.

we'll add the factory radio/cassette.

for the 'go fast' bits...
Skunk 2 Pro intake manifold because if you've ever seen the bull***t intake manifold that comes stock on this econo-motor... you'll understand.
AEM V2 induction system because this intake will fit on the Skunk 2 manifold, and because it gives the best mid-range of available intakes on the market.
APEXi World Sport 2 catback exhaust a nice, deep sound, and a better flowing design, since the D16Y7 has 2 catalytic converters...

for for the suspension setup... (yay my specialty)
ASR subframe brace, endlinks, and 24mm rear sway bar
Suspension Techniques 24mm front sway bar kit
OmniPower rear lower control arms
Koni Reds with Eibach Sportline springs
Lower center of gravity, and reduced side-to-side body roll. better braking, better turning, overall better handling.

15x6.5 Rota Slipstreams
BFGoodrich g-force Sport
a good set of tires and lightweight wheels are the best compliment to a good suspension setup.

woohoo about 80 bucks or so left over.

time for an oil change! Royal Purple 5w30 oil and a K&N oil filter.

and time for lunch. DONE DEAL.

They both have side molding... I was told they were CXs, because they didn't have hubcaps... meh... whatever. Serves me right for not knowing everything about the car I chose for you guys to play with. You added the pricing for the cassette stereo, but it turns out that's about the same price for the CD stereo for a '97 (I based the option prices on a '99, but have since corrected them), so you now have a CD player instead of that cassette you were expecting. Anyway, nice build-up! And great job on providing reference links and mods in an organized manner!

Yeah, grandpa kept it in his garage... and had it waxed e very spring, and used Armor-All on the the interor vynil and plastic. The seats are in great shape too, because he had those sheepskin seatcovers to keep his old a** comfortable. Unfortunately, you didn't get those seatcovers with the car, because he wanted to be buried with them.

Just to let everyone know, I updated the initial post to reflect my mistake in trim level. I also discovered (via Edmunds) that in '96 and '97, Honda did offer power steering as an option. So that's a factory option that you guys can add (for a price), if you want it.

Righto here's my stuff, Sorry if I got anything wrong 4 cylinder Civics aren't really a strong point of mine, But I tried my best.

Motor:

Cyclone Cold Air Intake $230

TamKO Honda D Series Extractors $399

Realize TT-R exhaust system $800

Suspension, Rims and tires:

Eibach Pro Kit Lowering Spring Suspension $199

Enkei RPF1 17x9.5 $280

Goodyear Eagle RS-A tires P255/55R17 $231

Interior:

Sparco Torino II Racing Seat $600

Autotechnica 6 Point Racing Harness $200

And there we have it, A grand total of $2939. So the extra $61 can be spent fuel to drive the darn thing.
