That's a shame! I got my probationary license in 2007, just managed to slip in before they moved to the new system n Victoria (harder/longer tests, two levels of license etc).

Don't worry, you'll be driving before you know it and then you'll be thinking how nice it was when you just got lifts everywhere and didn't have to deal with other road users! lol xd

I don't think the age should go up, but I do agree with restrictions.

Over here they've introduced red and green P's. Red P's are for the first 6 months and you can't drive at night. Personally this is how I'd like to see it work.

First 6 months you can't carry passengers at night (to stop peer pressure for hooning). You can only drive a car with a certain power to weight ratio

For the second 6 months, your power to weight ratio is less strict to allow most V6 cars and you can carry 1 passenger under 30 at night. Passengers over 30 you can carry as many as is legal in your car.

After that, you have 12 months under normal P-Plater rules (0% alcohol, stricter control on vehicles ect ect). You can carry as many passengers as legal and your power to weight restriction is lessened again to allow some slower V8's and quicker V6's.

But here's the catch, if you get caught doing the wrong thing, you get knocked back a stage and have to complete that whole stage again. People won't want tighter restrictions so won't be stupid, and it solves having to put the ages and stuff like that up.

that's not actually a bad idea. Just one question though... what heppens if it's a first stage P driver that breaks the rules?

Hmm possibly they could have a 3 month disqualification period.

that's a long time to be doing P's and a bit unfair cause you cant even go out at night with your group of friends. who's says would do any thing dangerous

as it stands, the P Period in WA is already 2 years (increased from 1 some years ago) so all that would be happening would be introducing heavier penalties.

Something like that wouldn't really affect me because I don't go out at night much anyway...except for work. sweatdrop

You probably wouldn't do anything dangerous. It's mainly the kids who borrow Daddy's XR6 turbo or big brother's V8 Commodore who get egged on by their mates to do stupid things and end up around a pole.

For example, I drove my dads HSV Clubsport on P plates and it's nothing like driving anything I'd driven before. But I got a feel for the car and drove it to have a bit of fun but not stupid. Some people just put their foot to the floor and end up sideways into a pole of a car with a family in it.

The only reason I say restrict the number of passengers is to stop things like that. I know most people wouldn't be stupid anyway, but some will, and I think you'd rather not be able to have passengers for a few months than have to wait 6 more years to get your Ps

And P's already are two years.

As much as it...really doesn't/wouldn't effect me...I kinda agree with passenger restrictions. Only because you can be doing everything right and drive perfectly, but all it takes is some idiot who's had one too many or who just can't resist the urge to show off to his mates (sorry, statistically speaking it's usually young men) to screw things up.

A mate of mine was waiting at a red light one arvo when two cars nearby collided and one side swiped his car rolleyes

If there were night curfews, and you had to be on the road during those hours (ie, you work nights) I'm pretty sure they'll be alright with that.

The current road curfews for Red P-Platers here in Perth allow you to drive at night to or from work or study. I got a letter all about "the new changed to P-Plates" a month after I finished my P-Plates. Guess they forgot to take me off the mailing list XD

Unfortunately, there are people who need these laws because otherwise they just wouldn't drive safely for whatever reason.

*sigh* if everyone could just put their brain in gear before they get behind the wheel (and keep it engaged!) then we wouldn't have half the problems we do now. rolleyes

lol, I sound like some old nanna sweatdrop
