Hmm, I think just getting rid of the item would improve your avatar, but you mentioned it was a gift and you wanted to keep it. If thats the case, then I say use the blue one instead of the red! Since the red is close-but-not-quite the right color you've been using it looks out of place. The blue will look out of place as well, but less like you tried to match it and more like you just happen to have a blue light-sword and screw anyone who thinks its funny. Y'know?

Looks like an intergalactic fireball-man ready to blow up planets or something. The lightsaber seems a little out of place, though.
