Sounders’ Montero honored by MLS
NEW YORK (TICKER) —Seattle Sounders FC striker Fredy Montero on Monday was named the MLS’ Player of the Week for Week One of the 2009 season.
Montero recorded two goals and one assist to lead the Sounders to a 3-0 triumph over the New York Red Bulls in their inaugural game.
The 21-year-old Colombian international opened the scoring in the 12th minute after accepting a feed from Sebastien Le Toux and blasted a shot past New York goalkeeper Danny Cepero.
After setting up Brad Evans in the 25th minute, Montero capped the scoring in the 75th minute with a blast over Cepero’s left shoulder.
Montero was acquired by Seattle in January on loan from Deportivo Cali, where he led the Copa Mustang League in scoring with 16 goals last season.
