This is a thread for everyone who wants to work on the Care Package idea I mentioned in the Guild Projects thread. This will be a designated area for us to brainstorm, test out graphics, and generally work out the kinks of what I hope will be a fun charity!
As of right now, I'm toying with two options. The first is to organize everything in this thread and make a list of eligible new users to receive a welcome/care package. We could make a mule account (either with shared access or not) to send items to and distribute them across the Welcome Forum as we see fit, or we could make the packages ourselves, individually.
I prefer the second option: making an actual "home base" thread in the Charity forum. The bad part of this, however, is that the new users would have to come to us. It would be like your average Charity thread -- people post around, ask for help, get placed on a list, and the mods of the thread choose who they think is best for the donation.
If we did the second option, we would need graphics and things though. I know there was at least one volunteer in the graphics department, as well as a volunteer to help be part of the "committee" as I'm calling us. Anyone who wants to help with this, feel free to bounce ideas off of each other!
Brainstorm away! 3nodding

The only thing I don't like about the charity forum thing is that some people might see the thread and create a new mule just to be a mooch.

That's a good point. It's unfortunate that people do exploit charity threads. Maybe we could put rules up that would deter people away from taking advantage of it like that. For instance, saying you have to have been on Gaia for a certain amount of time and also asking them to post in the thread a few times at least? Maybe they won't find it's worth it to make a new account only to have them wait two or three weeks until they can maybe get picked by a charity.

I agree that it should be in Charity. Have we considered looking at any other newcomer charities to get an idea of how to model ours?

I think having it in the charity forum is a great idea and the 2 week limit would be a great way of detering scammers.
Maybe we could make a banner with a link to the charity and post it in the Welcome To Gaia forums sometimes.

Question: Do you guys think most brand new users go to the Charity forum? When I first signed up, I didn't know how to navigate the site well at all. lol But what are the chances of newbies finding the thread?

I VOLUNTEER. heart
Brand new users don't go the Charity forum right away... but the ones that are probably going to stay on Gaia for a longer time will probably find it. The two week idea is pretty good too. :]
