[[ xDD Blame setting and title on Hikari. I forced her to make suggestions. 8] <3 ]]

The bookstore was large; a labyrinth of texts ranging widely in their subjects. Abilene browsed the aisles, carrying around a small silk purse with a sense of purpose. Toran had brought her here to stay and decide on what she'd like to buy for a few hours. This might have seemed like an unusual amount of time to remain in a store and decide just what to read, but Abilene was an extremely thorough person.

The Lotus child perused each title, closely examining each book and making mental notes. Part of it was a sense of wanting to please her adopted parents, while another part was the idea of keeping herself quietly entertained for a good long while. She was having trouble finding true interest in titles about religion or histories, and many mystery books were fairly unappealing. She'd been entranced with fantasy, but she was still all too preoccupied with the vivid pictures of the children's books. Children's books were also easier to read, as she was a child, but oftentimes they were much too short.

What to choose?

Vanyel was no stranger to the book store, and the staff greeted her as if she were one of them when she popped in through the door. Although the library was her favorite haunt, every now and again the woman was itching for a book she could just keep, call her own, read as often as she wanted. After all, it was a fairly recent occasion that she was literally removed from the library at closing hours! Big smile, deep breath, it was more like home here, than back where she lived. Not that she didn't love her home of course, but things hadn't been the most perfect as of late.

Hauling her brown shoulder sack (as Kitten less than affectionately called it) back into it's rightful place, she set off for the young adult section, where books were filled with mystery, and romance, and magic. She liked a little bit of everything in her novels, and the best had to have some sort of flame between the characters. She was standing there, staring up at the shelves with a bit of wonder lust in her eyes, when the lotus smelling child walked by the first time.

Honestly, the teen wasn't exactly on the look out for scent babies, so you couldn't blame her for being completely oblivious the first time, especially when the scent was hardly strong, and not uncommon. When the girl wandered past on the second time however, Vanyel turned to notice, brows lifted slightly. "Looking for something in particular?" she offered.

Abilene had been wandering through the young adult section, gazing at bejeweled covers and ornate titles when she heard the voice. She glanced up, surprised to be greeted by a pleasant perfume as she inhaled.

"I--I'm not sure what I'm looking for." Abilene replied politely, her dark amber-hued eyes on the teenager before her. She wondered if she looked at all lost wandering through the bookstore as she had been for the last half-hour or so and flushed, feeling slight humiliation at her lack of direction. She was much too indecisive about small choices such as the ones she'd be expected to make in a bookstore.

Vanyel chewed her lip for a moment before standing on top toe to look about the cluttered book store, wondering just where the 'helpful' people were when they were needed. When it was plenty clear they were more than preoccupied, the citrus scent flashed a sweet smile to the other girl.

"Well, I can't find anyone official to help you, but I know this place like the back of my hand, so I'd be happy to help you find something. Do you know what you like?" Although Vanyel had been sorely tempted to pause for contemplation about just how well someone knew the back of their own hand, she'd plowed ahead, always happy to help someone out, especially if it was about books!

Abilene folded her petite hands before her and gazed to Vanyel as the other scent scanned the bookstore, although the lotus child wasn't quite sure what she was looking for. She blinked as Vanyel informed her she could help and nodded her gratitude before speaking. "I was looking for something with pictures or art... but all of the children's books are short." She lamented, pursing her pink lips.

Of course, there was probably no way of solving this dilemma, but Abilene was always eager for some obscure solution. There was always that very small possibility, after all. She'd have to get to chapter books with minimal pictures at some point, but no matter how mature she was considered she enjoyed the picture books. She acted like a child in many ways, despite the beliefs of some. It was only natural.

The citrus teen pressed her tongue tip against the middle of her upper lip, giving a slight humming noise to show she was thinking. Children's books that weren't really children's books, that was a little difficult. "Well let's see. There's lots of books that are long, with a lot of pictures. But they aren't really stories after all..."

Vanyel led the girl over to the young adults history section and rummaged around before pulling up a few books and flipping through them to show the other scent. "These were my favorite books when I was younger. It's great to read, to learn, and to look. You can also make up your own stories this way, making the pictures whatever you'd like them to be."

It probably wasn't what the girl wanted, but that was the best thing she could think of. Otherwise she could dig for hours through all the books, looking for the ones that had pictures but weren't too short. Hopefully, the girl's desire for longer books would win out over her desire for pictures. Vanyel personally found them distracting, because she enjoyed imagining her own images.

Abilene watched Vanyel, her expression rapt and partly worshipful. She was always flattered when people decided to help her, although she usually felt some guilt about it. Certainly, her request had been ridiculous. She'd been searching the bookstore for a little while already and had only failed. From the look on the other scent's face, it was probably impossible to appease Abilene's wishes; still, this actually helped quite a bit. It meant that the girl was ready to settle for something different, now that she saw that what she desired was truly unattainable.

Abilene trailed after the citrus-scented teen, tilting her head forward to observe the reccommended books. "Okay." She nodded, interested. Certainly, she'd never read books like this, but Abilene wasn't terribly afraid to experiment.

"Thank you." The child smiled, looking pleased with this new discovery.

Vanyel was the type to be just as excitable about helping others as she was excitable about all the books in the store. As she leafed through one of these books, a rather detailed novel about Egypt and it's past, the girl stole a few hidden glances at the other girl. She was polite and quiet, but the type that may pretend to be polite just to get rid of someone else? Who knew?

The teen flopped onto the floor, the book on Egypt sprawled upon her lap, but she reached across the aisle to grab a book on butterflies and their nature. Flipping a few pages in, she found a page filled with lovely looking butterflies and with a few little doodles on the page with her finger, they suddenly rose to life straight from the book.

Lead by Vanyel's signature orange butterfly, the group circled a few times around Abilene, fluttering through her hair, before the whole of them gave a soft 'pop' of orange smoke and vanished. It had been a simple enough trick, but Vanyel looked slightly drained from the process. Hopefully it had been worth it.

Abilene traced a slender finger lightly across the bindings of the books on the shelf, reading the titles to herself silently, her lips forming each word precisely, although she did not utter a sound. She was caught up in the task of choosing books now that her search had been extremely narrowed down, and barely noticed when Vanyel sat on the floor and grabbed the book on the subject of butterflies.

The girl was about to choose a book on flowers when her eyes locked on the colorful butterflies. Abilene gasped softly in admiration, watching the delicate creatures circle her with wide amber eyes. One glance at Vanyel told the insightful girl the source of the butterflies.

She smiled ruefully as the butterflies vanished in orange smoke, her eyes seeking out Vanyel yet again. "That was beautiful." The scent murmured, in awe. She'd certainly never see anything quite as unique as that in her short life. Indeed, she'd forgotten all about the books she'd been searching for so determinedly.

Vanyel shifted to push her glasses back up her nose and smiled at the girl as her hand fell away. "Thanks," she said simply, before putting the book on butterflies to her side in case the other girl might be interested in reading further about Vanyel's personal favorite insect. A stretch and a yawn revealed a bit of exhaustion in the teen, but not in a disrespectful manner which may have made the other girl feel she was intruding on Vanyel's personal time. Not that there was much to do back home anyways; actually, it was flat out boring back home.

"Everyone discovers a different power when they grow up. Mine's just...simple magic. I guess it's good for me, because I can do just about anything I put my mind to," Vanyel started, before trailing off awkwardly with a sort of sad expression. Though she could accomplish a wider variety than the other kids, their powers were sure to be more concentrated on a single power, which would be infinitely strong than hers could ever be. You win some you lose some.

Abilene watched Vanyel, her expression rapt as the teenager spoke. Her attention was completely captured by now, and her usually mature expression had been replaced with one made up of a more childish one of muted joy. "That's amazing." The petite scent commented, looking utterly sincere. She envied Vanyel's abilities and saw no downside, as she was doing no overanalyzing on the subject.

Clearly, Vanyel had become some sort of idol for the quiet child in mere moments. Her eyes trailed to the book on butterflies and she made a note of its title; certainly, she would get that one, now. Maybe she'd get two books, today. One on flowers and the butterfly book Vanyel had just set aside. An absent smile played on Abilene's lips as she pondered her choices; she was extremely glad she had come by now. She'd discovered much more than she would have in any other situation, thanks to Vanyel. Things had worked out beautifully for the lotus scent.
